│║ If there's one thing to be said about Tunisian ║ │
│║ prog metal band Myrath in their fruitful 10 ║ │
│║ years as a band, it's that, compared with so ║ │
│║ many bands with a prog metal background, they ║ │
│║ understand the importance of composing an ║ │
│║ instantly memorable song that can be sung along ║ │
│║ to by a potential listener. From the moment they ║ │
│║ burst onto the scene, they had a clearly ║ │
│║ established identity as a band that would write ║ │
│║ metal that takes the epic (courtesy of power ║ │
│║ metal influences) and the ethnic (courtesy of ║ │
│║ their Tunisian heritage, which dictates ║ │
│║ everything from the Arabic folk influences in ║ │
│║ their music to their visual aesthetics) and ║ │
│║ blend it together in a sound that, despite not ║ │
│║ being the first nor only band to combine metal ║ │
│║ and Arabic folk influences, makes them stand out ║ │
│║ from the crowd of Melechesh and Orphaned Land ║ │
│║ disciples. In that time, their approach has ║ │
│║ become more streamlined and, predictably, the ║ │
│║ songs have become shorter and more focused as ║ │
│║ the band likely no longer felt the need to prove ║ │
│║ themselves as musicians but, rather, as ║ │
│║ composers. But rather than dull down their ║ │
│║ music, the focus on shorter songs that makes the ║ │
│║ bulk of their musical focus on "Legacy", their ║ │
│║ newest album in almost five years allows the ║ │
│║ band to craft an irresistibly catchy collection ║ │
│║ of songs that sacrifice neither the metallic nor ║ │
│║ folk influences in their playing. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While the basic crux of their sound, a mixture ║ │
│║ of power/prog tendencies with Arabic music, ║ │
│║ hasn't really changed, it has been updated in ║ │
│║ some respects and streamlined in others. One of ║ │
│║ the most notable changes on "Legacy" is the ║ │
│║ increased emphasis on symphonic strings ║ │
│║ accompanying the more traditional metal ║ │
│║ instrumentation. While I'm usually on the fence ║ │
│║ about the use of symphonic passages in metal ║ │
│║ music, here Myrath manages to make it work, ║ │
│║ since the stings serve the purpose of adding an ║ │
│║ added sense of epic grandeur to the already well ║ │
│║ written songs, and they call to mind the sort of ║ │
│║ orchestral accompaniment that was so common in ║ │
│║ older Arabic musical artists such as Fairouz and ║ │
│║ Um Kulthum. However, while the strings play an ║ │
│║ indispensable role in the sound of the album, ║ │
│║ they do not overshadow the metallic components ║ │
│║ of the songs at all. Malek Ben Arbia's guitar ║ │
│║ tone is as thick and heavy as ever, and on "The ║ │
│║ Needle", he does what he excels at and writes ║ │
│║ guitar passages that are instantly heavy and ║ │
│║ catchy. In fact, "The Needle" may take the prize ║ │
│║ as being, along with the second track ║ │
│║ "Believer", one of the best songs on the album, ║ │
│║ thanks to the epic buildup in the opening song ║ │
│║ that could have come from the soundtrack to a ║ │
│║ Hollywood blockbuster, the impressive ║ │
│║ musicianship of the band, and the stirring ║ │
│║ melodies in the chorus. If there's one thing ║ │
│║ that struck my mind about this album, it is that ║ │
│║ even the softer songs such as the mournful ║ │
│║ "Through Your Eyes" are too heavy to qualify as ║ │
│║ proper ballads. If anything, Myrath is content ║ │
│║ to forget about writing any breather ballads and ║ │
│║ remind us that beautiful melodies and metal ║ │
│║ music are not mutually exclusive. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Lyrically speaking, Myrath doesn't deviate too ║ │
│║ far from their usual tendencies to frame ║ │
│║ personal struggles in an epic frame, with the ║ │
│║ occasional fantastical elements thrown in there ║ │
│║ ("Duat" explicitly contains references to ║ │
│║ Egyptian mythology and "The Unburnt" to "A Song ║ │
│║ of Ice and Fire"), which is not far off from the ║ │
│║ lyricism of say, Ronnie James Dio's work. ║ │
│║ Speaking of powerful metal vocalists, while all ║ │
│║ of the musicians involved in the project have ║ │
│║ their moments to shine and revel in their ║ │
│║ talents, the most noticeable presence on the ║ │
│║ album is frontman Zaher Zorgati. This isn't a ║ │
│║ surprise, given that Zaher has always shown ║ │
│║ himself to be an incredibly talented vocalist ║ │
│║ with a unique ability to let his voice float ║ │
│║ along the melodies in true Arabic fashion, but ║ │
│║ here he truly stands out, going from a powerful ║ │
│║ force to be reckoned with to a mournful soul ║ │
│║ lamenting the losses and struggles in life. He ║ │
│║ is without a doubt one of the best vocalists ║ │
│║ working in within the power/prog niche, if not ║ │
│║ in the metal genre in general, and I say that in ║ │
│║ all confidence that he may just be the Ronnie ║ │
│║ James Dio of the Arabic world. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ At this point in Myrath's musical journey, there ║ │
│║ is not much that can truly surprise the ║ │
│║ listeners short of an epic concept album, but ║ │
│║ then again, Myrath has already proven what their ║ │
│║ capable of. "Legacy" is, comparatively speaking, ║ │
│║ their most accessible album to date, but ║ │
│║ accessibility is not bad on it's own if the work ║ │
│║ in question can stand out to both newbies and ║ │
│║ longtime listeners (although as accessible as ║ │
│║ this album may be, given the nature of the music ║ │
│║ market and the general bias against most things ║ │
│║ Middle Eastern and North African, I doubt this ║ │
│║ album will be listened to by non-metalheads in ║ │
│║ the States). In that respect, Myrath succeeds in ║ │
│║ producing an album of solid, melodic metal. If ║ │
│║ you're expecting something more musically ║ │
│║ complex and heavy along the lines of "Desert ║ │
│║ Call", you might be a little disappointed by the ║ │
│║ fairly straightforward nature of this album. If ║ │
│║ you are looking for an album that takes the ║ │
│║ shorter song structures of "Tales of the Sands" ║ │
│║ and increases the symphonic and Middle Eastern ║ │
│║ musical aspects of the album, this will more ║ │
│║ than satisfy you. However, I can't imagine many ║ │
│║ people who won't feel something stirring in ║ │
│║ their soul as they hear this record, and if this ║ │
│║ album affects you the same way it did me, you ║ │
│║ will no doubt be eagerly awaiting their next ║ │
│║ album (and hoping it takes less than four and a ║ │
│║ half years). ║ │
