Following on from French label M-TronicÆs concept of releasing
split CDÆs, where two artists share their work and combine for a
collaborative remix, comes Chemical Elements 2.0. The original
Chemical Elements featured Ch District (Poland) and Duuster
(Holland), this time round itÆs electronic sound manipulators
Cellular (Sweden) and Diakof (Poland).
Cellular (aka Adrian Jonsson) gives us the opening seven tracks,
featuring loose, melodic IDM. JonssonÆs stark arrangements nod
towards KraftwerkÆs production techniques; thin, motoric and often
playful. Bloc is a lovely little track, full of sparkling melodies
and spiralling, sequenced patterns. Some of the rhythms seem a bit
random, but it definitely has a unique style. The excellent
Monosyllable surprises by opening with a series of upbeat piano
loops before exploding into a drumÆnÆbass haze û there is absolutely
no doubt that there is a Squarepusher influence on this track, one
that is absent elsewhere, but it still manages to blend in. Cellular
then closes with The Shadow Of John Maynard Keynes, another
enjoyably tuneful downtempo track remixed by Diakof, and notable for
its clever use of cut up background vocal samples.
Diakof (aka Dominik Smolarcyk) then lets rip with 7 tracks of his
own. This time the electronica is darker and carries a much heavier
atmosphere. Smolarcyk cleverly fuses together intricate loops with a
cacophony of bitty samples, both electronic and vocal based. Again,
the production is clean, clinical and cleverly pieced together. Form
is a great little track, full of polished loops and hypnotic
melodies and tones, whilst Nikt Nie Zqinie offers quaint Boards Of
Canada-style laptronica.
Whilst there are many influences at play in what Celluilar and
Diakof both have to offer (their closing collaborative effort, Min
Plik, imitates Aphex Twin), Chemical Elements 2.0 still offers real
sideways alternatives to much of the fashionable IDM we hear today,
whilst still managing to reside on the friendlier side of
electronica.
