The Weeping Willows released their debut album in 1997 and were quickly
associated with the growing interest in country in Sweden. But unlike the
bands that would lead the actual country revival a few years later - for
example Alimony - they never really played country, but a strange brew of
different sentimental American styles. The result could be described as
sentimental rock with thick string and horn arrangements. Their debut album
sold very well, and through a lot of airplay, they quickly reached
worldwide fame.
Since their 1997 debut "Broken Promise Land", "Tomorrow Became Today" is
probably the most varied Weeping Willows album yet. Magnus Carlson, Anders
Hernestam, Ola Nystrom and Niko Rohlcke have all contributed songs, and are
exploring new grounds here - without losing the group's root sound. All
members have a musical heritage, and they preserve it together. The single
"My Love Is Not Blind" is a good example of the band's ability of
constantly moving forwards, going more uptempo than the usual Weeping
Willows sound. It's Northern indie soul, danceable too, and the playfulness
is one of the things significant to "Tomorrow Became Today".
Having decided on really enjoying themselves this time around, Weeping
Willows travelled to Berlin and let Michael Ilbert (Thastrom) mix this
album in the legendary Hansa Studios, where masterpieces like Bowies'
"Heroes" was recorded. For the first time, the group also opted to work
with skilled produced Magnus Frykberg. A mutual music nerd aside the
Willows, Frykberg acknowledged the members' references. The emotion, the
feeling was more important than anything else - and the versions on this
album are usually the ones recorded in the first or second take.
In recent years thoroughly proving themselves as a reliable live act, it
took no less than seven years between "Fear & Love" (2007) and "The Time
Has Come" (2014). "Tomorrow Became Today" is the third Weeping Willows
album in two years, including the christmas album "Christmas Time Has
Come", and each release was followed by extensive touring. With the live
setting in mind, the band decided on trying bring some of that live energy
into "Tomorrow Became Today". The joy, the hopefullness, and the love.
