Toko was set up by Paul Ingall and Alec Greenhough in 1994. Alec had
a long history in record distribution, working for Panther, RTM (for
5 years) and Global distribution. Paul had jacked in his accoutancy
job in 1993 to become a DJ and quickly found himself resident at Love
To Be before moving on to Sheffield's Republic nightclub. Alec's
distribution links and Pauls ability to cook the books made setting
up a record label a good idea.
Alec and Paul are not the most organised people in the world and
releases were slow at first with only three in the first three years
(Paul still says that this seemed a very acceptable work rate!!). By
1996 they had built up a regular working relationship with Si Brad
and at this stage things started taking off for the label.
The last couple of years have seen the label's profile and sales go
from strength to strength. There has been fantastic support from the
music press with over 20 "Singles Of The Week/Month" in the UK alone.
Future planning has never been Toko's strong point, but now for the
first time there is a bit of a release schedule for albums over the
next year which they say they will have a pop at sticking to.
