Saul Stokes combines modern 'Ambient' music with the
traditional variety all on one album. To these ears he is
best when concentrating on the former though the latter
does provide pleasant relaxing interludes.The best is
saved till first. The atmospheric intro to 'We found it at
Io' uses twittering cosmic effects which ripple over deep
bass drones. A superb sequence comes next then a Peter
Benisch like rhythm breaks through. This is fantastically
infectious, got me drumming on the desk and kicking the
cat (don't worry it moved in time). Great sounds and a
fantastic beat when combined together with this sort of
skill always do it for me. On 'Deep in the Grass' a low
hum, as if an aircraft is slowly getting closer forms a
canvas on which other drones and effects are placed. In
other words we are in trad ambient territory.
'The Tunnel Twins' uses a three note sequence / loop to
get things going but then another magnificent sounding
rhythm is spot welded into place. The underlying effects
are also magnificent. The second half of the track is made
even more appealing by the repeated use of an infectious
lead motif. 'Zona' is the shortest piece at five minutes.
This time at seems to be a helicopter which is
approaching. A tuneful half heard melody accompanies it
and it is when the helicopter disappears and the melody is
left on its own that the track becomes most effective. We
drift from the shortest number to the longest with
'Kasei'. A rhythm comes in for a few minutes then fades
away. A twangy swirling accompaniment is added with a
vaguely vocal quality to it. The rejuvenated rhythm then
returns with an even more in yer face one alongside it.
'Clearing' is another traditional ambient number full of
dense drones shifting and merging with one another. 'Sweet
Paraffin' returns us to rhythmic territory though very
laid back and melancholy. Rather a strange track - I don't
know what it's about but to me it seemed slightly
disturbing.
