│ Smoothing out the seams between '70s-style soul and modern ││
│ electro, London duo Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns -- aka ││
│ Zero 7 -- are as much bandleaders as they are DJs and ││
│ producers. It's often tough to tell where the studio ││
│ musicianship ends and the pair's selection of pre-recorded ││
│ source music begins. ││
│ ││
│ The swelling string tracks on Zero 7's acclaimed debut ││
│ Simple Things, first released in Europe last year and ││
│ recently reissued here through EMI, are culled from ││
│ archival recordings of TV and film music. ││
│ ││
│ Those serve as orchestral accompaniment to Hardaker and ││
│ Binns' jazzy, down-tempo beat selections, which are ││
│ overlaid with live bass, guitar, brass, woodwinds and, ││
│ most notably, stunning vocal turns by in-house singers Sia ││
│ Furler, Sophie Barker and someone named Mozez. ││
│ ││
│ The result is some deeply soulful chill-out sounds. As on ││
│ tracks I Have Seen, Destiny and Give It Away, the strong ││
│ songwriting ensures that things extend beyond simple ││
│ ear-candy status. The string orchestra on the title track ││
│ and the filmic End Theme only make the fusion smoother. ││
