Album of the month - Zuco 103 'Outro Lado' (Wax, UK)
"What a fantastic way to start the World Fusion column for 2000.
Zuco 103 are a three piece collective made up of Brazilian
songstress Lilian Vieira, Amsterdam drummer Stefan Kruger and
German keyboardist Stefan Schmid. Together they have come up with
one of the most innovative albums you're likely to find this side
of 2001. Think Brazilian with a healthy dose of experimental
electronica and whacky bossa beats and you're half way there. It's
an album you will keep coming back to time and again. There is so
much here to keep anybody with a passion for that funky bossa
groove eternally satisfied. Lilian's voice is a revelation and the
musical backdrops are continually exploring a myriad of sonic
avenues. This band don't always go for the easy option and Outro
Lado is all the better for it. Look out for a deeper insight into
this band in the near future. herald the flagship of the New
Brazilian wave. 10" Phil Meadley, Wax (UK)
Along with Suba and a host of other acts on the Brasil 2mil
compilation, Zuco 103 are one of the contemporary Brazilian acts
that Six Degrees Records have brought to the world stage via their
Travel series. Zuco 103 blend jazzy electronic pop, trip-hop, and
lightweight drum & bass with the joyful sounds of Brazilian samba,
bossa nova, and tropicalia. Although vocalist Lillian Vieira is
Brazilian, her two bandmates are Dutch and German, lending a
distinct blend of European and South American musical styles to the
music. The result is a refreshingly light, airy sound that can
swing from groovy, chirpy electropop ("Brazilectro") that sounds
like a South American Stereolab to campy modern exotica ("No Bar do
Samba") and funky hip-hop lite ("Auga Mineral") with a few stops at
the drum & bass shop in between. Short on depth but long on pep and
snappy grooves, Outro Lado is perfect listening for an extended
cocktail hour or beach party. There's even an inviting green
libation on the CD cover. --Carl Hanni, amazon.com
