Root Strata founder, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma scales supernal heights of dream-
pop and shoegazing noise bliss with 'A Year With 13 Moons' for Mexican
Summer. We'll get it out right now - this is easily Jefre's magnum opus; a
consolidation of all that we already loved about the incendiary romance of
his work, boosted by a renewed sense of wonder and a catalytic clash of pop
pangs fighting against avant garde instincts.
Under a title inspired by a Fassbinder film, 'A Year With 13 Moons' is the
result of a residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San
Francisco, during which the time-rich composer really indulged himself in
the process of learning how to let the music lead him, rather than the
other way around.
Feeling his way through banks of modular synths, guitars, drum machines and
concrete sources, the end product breaks down to a sprawling series of
concise episodes; sublime, haunting, and highly visual, if deeply abstract,
glimpses of an artist in his element, whether razing the sky with whirling
knife dissonance or knotting your stomach with the lushest harmonies.
Suffice it to say, fans of his Root Strata babes, OPN, Grouper or Yellow
Swans, and the likes of Fennesz or Ensemble Economique, are going to swoon
heavily for this record.
