│ Renounced are incredibly new on the UK hardcore scene, but they've │
│ been making waves since their EP Conditioned From Birth came out │
│ last year. Combining all the raw energy of hardcore with the │
│ chugging best-bits of late 90Æs metalcore, The Melancholy We Ache │
│ comes forth with arms outstretched, parting the seas of mediocrity │
│ to make way for something all-together different (and probably │
│ tugging on the nostalgic heartstrings for some). │
│ │
│ You'd easily be mistaken for thinking this was something written a │
│ good 10, even 15 years ago, not only in its genre style, but in │
│ quality too. IÆm trying to think back to the last small-scale band I │
│ can remember putting out something this established-sounding, and to │
│ be honest, IÆm failing miserably. Each song is plenty long enough │
│ for you to really sink your teeth into, turn over in your brain and │
│ digest fully from a single listen. That doesnÆt mean theyÆre not │
│ fast nor heavy enough to make an impact though they're just │
│ incredibly well constructed. │
│ │
│ │
│ Stomping through the first 8 minutes you get to 'How Heavy The │
│ Downpour' which demands your entire attentionà and perhaps a balled │
│ fist or two launched into the air. In fact, just keep them there for │
│ 'When History Repeats As Tragedy' too. 'Perennial' blossoms │
│ beautifully between the latter and 'Arching' proving that amongst │
│ this recordÆs consistency and brute force, there is variety and │
│ ethereal elements. The last four tracks are an amalgamation of │
│ buzzing guitars looming on the precipices of breakdowns and bright, │
│ melancholy intermissions and outros. │
│ │
│ ItÆs records like this that just continue to remind me how lucky I │
│ am to have friends that write and release some truly brilliant music │
│ into the world. If you ætake a chanceÆ on purchasing any release │
│ this year, I cannot recommend this enough. Pay up and mosh hard. │
│ │
│ Note: First time on cd anno 2015, so no reissue tag was needed ;) │
│ │
