│║ To most, Victor Smolski needs no introduction, ║ │
│║ having been the primary guitarist and one of the ║ │
│║ main songwriters of Rage for the past decade and ║ │
│║ a half, and prior to that being the driving ║ │
│║ force of German progressive metallers "Mind ║ │
│║ Odyssey", he's a legend among the German ║ │
│║ prog/power scene for sure, known for his ║ │
│║ classical/metal crossover talents. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Splitting from Rage due to musical differences ║ │
│║ last year, you'd think the guy would take some ║ │
│║ time off, but nope. Smolski has already returned ║ │
│║ with his latest symphonic power metal ║ │
│║ masterpiece and debut from Almanac. Tsar, a rock ║ │
│║ opera about the brutal reign of Ivan The ║ │
│║ Terrible, from life to death and everything ║ │
│║ between, it's just as amazing lyrically as it is ║ │
│║ musically. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Like most great concept albums, the music really ║ │
│║ reflects the story with darker sounding songs ║ │
│║ that really describe how mad and corrupted Ivan ║ │
│║ was, such as "Reign of Madness" or triumphant ║ │
│║ songs that bring the promise of hope like ║ │
│║ "Children of the Future" The powerful, driving ║ │
│║ vocals of David Readman and Andy B. Franck as ║ │
│║ well as the soothing and haunting vocals of ║ │
│║ Jeannette Marchewka fit the atmosphere of the ║ │
│║ album perfectly and all three vocalists get ║ │
│║ plenty of time to shine. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If you're familiar with Smolski, you'll know ║ │
│║ what to expect here. Furious, thrashy, speedy ║ │
│║ and occasionally groovy (main riff of "Reign of ║ │
│║ Madness" automatically comes to mind) riffs, ║ │
│║ virtuosic and passionate neo-classical guitar ║ │
│║ shredding (That solo in the title track, "Self ║ │
│║ Blinded Eyes" or the mini instrumental ║ │
│║ "Shadows", I mean damn) over bombastic ║ │
│║ orchestration (All the songs are just perfectly ║ │
│║ orchestrated) and choruses like in "No More ║ │
│║ Shadows" or the title track that will get stuck ║ │
│║ in your head for days and will surely be ║ │
│║ favorites at their live performances. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The production is really fantastic and all ║ │
│║ instruments are audible in the mix, the drums ║ │
│║ pound along to speedy raging tracks like ║ │
│║ "Nevermore" or "Self Blinded Eyes" and add the ║ │
│║ perfect atmosphere to mid-paced fist raisers ║ │
│║ like "Reign of Madness" or "Flames of Fate" even ║ │
│║ the bass has some awesome lines like in "Hands ║ │
│║ are Tied". Simply put, this album has all the ║ │
│║ components of a certified Victor Smolski ║ │
│║ masterpiece, it keeps us in that familiar ║ │
│║ Smolski-LMO territory while still sounding fresh ║ │
│║ as well. If you're a fan of Smolski era Rage, ║ │
