there is no doubt about hans platzgumer being a legendary person
in the international music-curcuit.
born in innsbruck, austria in 1969, he released his first album
'tod der cd!' by the age of 17 after rushing through school and
classical guitar studies at the conservatory. the record made a
point against the upcoming compact disc industry and remains a
sought-after cult-classic even today, being one of the first
intentional lo-fi indie albums of that time.
living partly in vienna and berlin he finishes his
electro-accoustic studies at the musikhochschule in vienna in
1989, already touring all over europe and various
east-bloc-countries. he performs and releases new albums solo and
with groups like k╓b, capers, platzlinger (a duo with berlin-based
freejazz-drummer peter hollinger).
summer 89 sees him and his mate frank puempel move to new york
city where they start the infamous indie-group hp zinker which
quickly becomes rooted in the lower eastside-scene, playing with
bands like sonic youth, ween, helmet, lemonheads or the jon
spencer blues explosion. matador records is set up to release the
first zinker album 'and there was light'. while the band leans
more and more towards progressive hardrock they release more
albums and videoclips on roughneck (london) and thrill jockey
(chicago).
constant touring in the us and europe finally pays its toll and
the band releases their last album 'at the mountains of madness'
in 1994 on nyc's energy records. its spectacular sleeve, designed
by stefan sagmeister, wins several art prizes and gets nominated
for a grammy. by now hans has already moved to los angeles where
he got involved with filmscoring and writing music for theaters.
he even gets to play a main part in the full-lenght feature 'deep
up there'.
the end of zinker makes hans move back to europe.
in hamburg, germany, he joins die goldenen zitronen with whom he
records 2 albums and tours the european continent.
at the same time he starts to plough deeply into the art of
electronic music and releases his first 12"es and albums under new
codenames like aura anthropica, seperator or fingerfood. with his
electronic outputs he finds a new home in munich's techno-label
disko b where he later even starts his own sublabel the seperator
series to release diverse new electronica.
1997 he moves to munich, gets into deejaying, sets up his own
studio son montuno and produces not only his own new music and
many remixes but also the commercially succesful german rockgroup
tocotronic.
he joins forces with austrian electro-pioneer gerhard potuznik as
cube & sphere, with japanese artist/singer cami tokujiro as
shinto, with german techno-gigolo dj hell and releases on disco b,
cheap (vienna), domino (london) and the music cartel (ny).
by the end of the century he deejays and performs live on
different continents and works in collaboration with artists of
all directions on different meltings of music with theatre, food,
sculpture, fine arts, radio drama and videoart.
in 2000 he releases his electronic masterpiece ædatacardÆ, a
hybrid of dark digital soundscapes and slamming breakbeats. the
cd-r also features a videoclip by sir georg gaigl, later on more
videos by various artists are produced for the album.
after the birth of his son æmarvinÆ he cuts down on live
performances and gets more and more into composing soundtracks to
movies and radio dramas as well as picking up more multimedia
work. new albums are produced for æaura anthropicaÆ, æshintoÆ and
the fake-identity supergroup æqueen of japanÆ. he brings back a
certain pop-appeal to his music, produces hard-edged remixes for
various pop-rock acts and collaborates with scottish singer/artist
catriona shaw. his everlasting love for p-funk and crystal clear
grooves shines through in all his new productions, even in his
æwhite noiseÆ-soundtrack to a 30Æs ski-film, his radio work
æhighÆ, æwanderw╓rterÆ, æwelche farbe hat rainhard fendrichÆ or
the eerie japanese-german musical æshonen aÆ.
in 2001 hp reaches his multimedia-diploma at the
