║ HereÆs something that makes sense: The Zenith Passage sounds a lot ║
║ like Planetary Duality-era The Faceless. Their guitarist, Justin ║
║ McKinney, splits time between this band and The Faceless, and ║
║ Michael Keene helped engineer this bandÆs debut, Solipsist. That ║
║ said, The Zenith Passage absolutely nail what made mid-career The ║
║ Faceless so endearing: a mix of space-y leads, Cynic-esque ║
║ songwriting and melody, and rumbling ôcore-ishö chugging. Again, ║
║ given the fact that they share a guitarist (and a very talented one ║
║ at that), this sonic similarity makes sense. If you think of The ║
║ Zenith Passage as trying to do their own thing, then you will likely ║
║ view the bandÆs debut as a disappointment. However, if you view ║
║ Solipsist as a side project of The Faceless or even just as a ║
║ thought experiment (how would The Faceless sound if they never ║
║ listened to Opeth?), then you can appreciate this record for what it ║
║ is: a dazzling display of furious, fun modern tech-death. ║
║ ║
║ To be completely fair, The Zenith Passage isnÆt just a copy and ║
║ paste operation. The band also incorporate ArchspireÆs wonderful mix ║
║ of hyper-speed and bounce and some Soreption-style riffage into ║
║ their tech-death chili. Hell, ôDeus Deceptorö is likely to be one of ║
║ the best death metal songs of the year, with a phenomenal opening ║
║ stop-start riff that weaves itself in and out of the song ║
║ throughout. Again, thatÆs whatÆs most interesting about The Zenith ║
║ Passage: sure, the resemblance to The Faceless is completely ║
║ impossible to ignore, but that doesnÆt really diminish the overall ║
║ enjoyment of the album if you can get past it. The band are clearly ║
║ talented songwriters (even if they are sometimes coloring within the ║
║ lines), so none of the album drags or asks to be skipped. ║

║ Overall, this is likely to be the best album weÆre going to get from ║
║ The Faceless this year, for various reasons. Sure, that sounds like ║
║ one Hell of a back-handed compliment, but The Zenith Passage arenÆt ║
║ the only band trying to emulate The FacelessÆ success. Instead, they ║
║ are clearly the best at honing in on what that band did so well and ║
║ molding it in their own way. With songs as strong as ôDeus Deceptorö ║
║ in hand, itÆs difficult to get too upset at the band when they know ║
║ what they are doing. Plus, they do it so damn well. ║
