Long before Victor Wooten became a member of five time Grammy Award
winners Bela Fleck and the Flecktones as well as a bass superstar so
supreme he checks in as one third of the bass royalty collective SMV
(with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller). Before Roy Wooten also
became a member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, known as Futureman
and purveyor of the futuristic (part drum machine/part guitar)
instrument known as The Drumitar. Before their keyboard playing
brother Joe Wooten enjoyed a double digit year stink as a mainstay
with the legendary Steve Miller Band, these three prodigious musical
fixtures joined brothers Regi and Rudy to form a family band that
was formidable to garner a calendar of regional gigs a prestigious
venues in the Virginia/North Carolina corridor.
This included a residency at kitetic performances at area amusement
park Busch Gardens. It was at one of these performances that they
came to the attention of noted R&B hitmaker producer Kashif. In the
early to mid 1980's there way have not been a more steadfast maker
of hits in the black music arena than Kashif. The astounding roster
of artists for whom he had delivered hit singles included Evelyn
Champagne King, Whitney Houston, George Benson, Kenny G, Melba
Moore, among others.
In the summer of 1983 Kashif had also proven to be an impact solo
recording artist in his own right. His self-titled debut album had
been released in the spring and had spawned the top 5 R&B hit "Lover
Turn Me On (I Just Got To Have You)". It was in preparation for the
subsequent tour to support that album that I first heard of The
Wooten Brothers Band out of Virginia. Kashif mentioned the brothers
when speaking of musicians he wanted to consider for his touring
band. He mentioned that the group was 'bad' (as was the vernacular
for exeedingly good in those days) and they all could play. He
mentioned that on this first tour he wanted to start with their
drummer and the keyboardist.
Over the next couple of years the musical relationship between
Kashif and The Wooten Brothers continued to blossom. Kashif's
prowess as a producer and as an artist lead Clive Davis, Arista
Records label head enter into a production arrangement where he
could record as well as develop any artist of his choosing. It was
under this arrangement that The Wooten Brothers album herein was
brought fourth.
This album serves a glimpse into what was going to be. Looking at
the musician and production credits reveal why that is so. Kashif
enlisted Wayne Braithwaite to handle some of the day to day
production chores. Wayne was very highly regarded as a bassist. This
was one of his early turns as a producer. Before his premature death
from cancer he grew to produce artists such as Billy Ocean, Kenny G,
Glenn Jones, and others. Kenny G was somewhat known at the time of
this release largely due to previous work with Jeff Lorber and
Kashif. Most importantly, all this was the first album released by
The Wooten Brothers. Their subsequent work has taken them to the
summit of contemporary musical history. For those who hold them in
high regard, this is a look at an early step in their journey.
