| Music usually enters your mind through your ears. But sometimes it |
| seeps in through your eyes and you don't even know it. Witness |
| turntablism, the art of using turntables as if they were musical |
| instruments. In a way, to see it is to hear it. Is hearing alone |
| as exciting? |
| |
| Packed in a shiny plastic disc come the hip-hop beats, scratches, |
| and funk riffs of Parisian turntablist Mister Aul. His debut album |
| D#Compoz alludes strongly to the cut-up and sample-filled worlds |
| of Invisbl Skratch Piklz, Scratch Perverts, and DJ Craze where the |
| sound of a needle scratching on vinyl is the music. |
| |
| After an introduction, the 15-track album opens with some |
| aggressive stab scratching on Pump Up The Bass, which then melts |
| into the Eastern European-sounding slow opening of Hypnozis. After |
| a longish break from scratching, Mister Aul dives in with some |
| deft moves between chirps, drags, and double-speed chirps, with |
| top-notch tipping on the vocal samples. All this is done at high |
| speed, creating a great contrast between the scratching and the |
| underlying slow beat. |
| |
| In a similar mood is Dark Side, but with beat juggling added to |
| the mix. So, the cruisy reggae feel of Open Up Your Mind |
| immediately after is rather unexpected. Startin' To Move is a |
| very heavy, atmospheric track that could either be the start of an |
| epic Wu-tang rap poem, or a tease into a drum'n'bass track that |
| doesn't quite get started. |
| |
| Although undoubtedly a skillful turntablist, Mister Aul best sets |
| himself apart with his references to funk grooves, something not |
| so common in scratching. Particularly impressive is the use of |
| wah-wah guitar riffs in Rock The Beat. Here, Mister Aul duets with |
| the guitarist as if they were on stage together, revealing the |
| affinity between the swung rhythm of wah-wah and certain |
| scratches. When the riffs and scratches become almost |
| indistinguishable, you know this is a standout track. |
| |
| In a world all its own is I Love Vinyl. Opening with a DJ |
| extolling the black wax, this absolutely killer track is amazing |
| in how it remains driving despite its stop-start scratching and |
| sampling. The closing track is a reprise of the earlier track Feel |
| This !, which features some more of Mister Aul's now trademark |
| funk riffs and a call to "Get Funky!". |
| |
| All the same, sitting back at home and just listening to |
| turntablism this good is more cerebral than fun. Perhaps this |
| album's greatest achievement is how it makes me want to throw down |
| my headphones and head to a club for the nearest DJ battle. My |
| eyes are wide open. |
