│║ To me, Leo Figaro is for Japan what Lance King ║ │
│║ is for the US - both are vocalists who are ║ │
│║ involved with a lot of projects, but never stay ║ │
│║ with one for more than about two albums/four ║ │
│║ years. I am familiar with Leo's work in ║ │
│║ Minstrelix, Eyes of Fenrir, and Dragon Guardian. ║ │
│║ He has an all-around pleasing voice and sings ║ │
│║ just as well in English as in Japanese. ║ │
│║ Dreamstoria is his latest project, this one ║ │
│║ debuting in late 2012. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Unlike the above bands, Dreamstoria is not ║ │
│║ metal. To give you an idea of Dreamstoria's ║ │
│║ sound, merge Survivor with Finland's Winterborn, ║ │
│║ Altaria, or Twilightning. Dreamstoria huddles ║ │
│║ closely around the mid-tempo pace for the first ║ │
│║ nine songs (one ballad in there) before getting ║ │
│║ just a hair faster for the very upbeat (and an ║ │
│║ early favorite) "Fly Away." ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I had listened to the 8-minute medley of this ║ │
│║ album about four times before purchasing the ║ │
│║ album. It presented the album as one having more ║ │
│║ variety. When I gave the album my first spin the ║ │
│║ day it arrived in the mail, I grew disappointed ║ │
│║ as I neared the latter half of the album. I said ║ │
│║ to myself, "...this is... barely different from ║ │
│║ the last song." I've felt that a number of times ║ │
│║ with these Japanese bands. Some of these bands ║ │
│║ blow me away (especially Balflare). Others (like ║ │
│║ Energy Strike) just don't venture far enough ║ │
│║ from their comfort zone for me. I guess it's hit ║ │
│║ or miss, because it isn't a talent thing. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Yes, three of the bands I compared to are ║ │
│║ Finnish. There is that "winter village" ║ │
│║ landscape throughout the album (just as you ║ │
│║ would expect from the cover art). Keyboards play ║ │
│║ a minor role. Drums are very relaxed and solos ║ │
│║ are infrequent and short. There aren't any quiet ║ │
│║ parts on the album, or build-up for that matter. ║ │
│║ "Goddess In My Eyes" probably comes the closest ║ │
│║ to anything resembling metal as it speeds up (a ║ │
│║ little) for the solo. The band Whitesnake might ║ │
│║ be a better comparison in that songs often rise ║ │
│║ to high choruses that are good for singing along ║ │
│║ without begging the listener to do so. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There isn't really anything the band does ║ │
│║ "wrong." It just leaves me yearning for more. I ║ │
│║ don't mean that I want more than the 40:35 ║ │
│║ playing time; I mean that I wish the band ║ │
│║ journeyed further from what they do well. That's ║ │
│║ why I got away from mainstream American music in ║ │
│║ the first place. Now, I've come all the way to ║ │
│║ the other side of the world to Japan, and I'm ║ │
│║ starting to see that same lack of variety. A ║ │
│║ little frustrating. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Winterborn isn't one of my favorite bands. Far ║ │
│║ from it. But I'd take even them over ║ │
│║ Dreamstoria. The difference? Winterborn has the ║ │
│║ 10-minute "On the Edge of Eternity." And that ║ │
│║ was on Winterborn's debut, too. I wanted to like ║ │
│║ Dreamstoria more. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ P.S. Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69 founder) ║ │
│║ produced this album. The sound quality is ║ │
│║ beautiful. I gather he's had his hand in a ║ │
│║ couple of projects from Japan including Azrael's ║ │
│║ Dream On album. ║ │
