▓████▓▌ Pascal HΘni, the future Pascal of Bollywood, spent ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his formative years growing up in a quite ▓▌
▓████▓▌ neighbourhood in Paris. But at the age of 40 his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ life burst into glorious Technicolor after he went ▓▌
▓████▓▌ out to India to record an album with Pyarelal, a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ living legend in Bollywood film music. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ There are those content to live out humdrum lives ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and those who prefer to live their dreams û and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Pascal HΘni falls firmly into the latter category! ▓▌
▓████▓▌ HΘni, a complete unknown on the French music scene, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ has just pulled off the enviable feat of flying out ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to India to record his dΘbut eponymous album with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Bollywood Film Orchestra conducted by Pyarelal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (a renowned composer and arranger who has written ▓▌
▓████▓▌ over 500 film scores for the musicals that have ▓▌
▓████▓▌ taken the Indian sub-continent by storm). Not bad ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for a young Parisian who grew up knowing nothing of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bollywoood or its music stars. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "I was born in Paris, in the Batignolles ▓▌
▓████▓▌ neighbourhood, in 1963," recounts HΘni "and I come ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from a family of 'pieds-noirs.'* So I can't say ▓▌
▓████▓▌ there's much of India in my genes! My parents ▓▌
▓████▓▌ didn't know the first thing about Indian music û ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and I didn't myself until a trip to Malaysia in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 1987! It was there I had my great musical ▓▌
▓████▓▌ revelation when I was at a market in Kuala Lumpur ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one day and this cassette of Indian music caught my ▓▌
▓████▓▌ eye. I was instantly drawn to the graphics and the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ look of the cover and that's what won me over ▓▌
▓████▓▌ before I even listened to the contents and became a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ committed fan. Johnny dÆJono, one of the songs I ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cover on my album was actually on that cassette. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ After I first heard the song, I found myself ▓▌
▓████▓▌ humming it all the time and I ended up making up ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French words which sounded close to the Indian ▓▌
▓████▓▌ phonetics." ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ HΘni was used to singing the work of French poets ▓▌
▓████▓▌ such as Rimbaud and Verlaine and setting German and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Turkish poetry and Italian texts by Dante to music. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ But he soon succumbed to the exotic Technicolor ▓▌
▓████▓▌ arrangements of Indian music, transported by its ▓▌
▓████▓▌ haunting melodies and high-pitched vocals, not to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mention the kitsch-style sequinned universe it came ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wrapped up in. Listening to mountains of cassettes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ he picked up on his travels, HΘni familiarised ▓▌
▓████▓▌ himself with these new sounds, delving into music ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from the 50s to the 70s, an era he describes as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "the golden age of Indian film soundtracks." (Since ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the 70s, synthesisers have hit Bollywood with a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ vengeance, greatly reducing the number of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ full-scale orchestras that used to operate on the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ film circuit). ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ From Bollywood to the club scene? ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The majority of the 13 tracks on Pascal of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bollywood's dΘbut album pay tribute to this golden ▓▌
▓████▓▌ age. But the album also includes a surprise Indian ▓▌
▓████▓▌ reworking of French 'chanson' classic La Vie en ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Rose (featured on the hip Indomania compilation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ produced by BΘatrice Ardisson) and Mozart India (an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ innovative musical take on Mozart's Fortieth). ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Unexpected nods to Piaf and Mozart aside, HΘni has ▓▌
▓████▓▌ delved into the vast archives of Indian film ▓▌
▓████▓▌ soundtracks and pulled out a handful of veritable ▓▌
▓████▓▌ gems. What's more, the French singer attempted to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ remain as faithful as possible to the originals. "I ▓▌
▓████▓▌ worked really hard on my pronunciation," he says, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "trying to get it as close as possible to the way ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Hindi, Tamil and Bengali are really spoken." ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Pascal of Bollywood has received welcome support ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from his compatriots in his attempt to build ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bridges between France and India. His first tour of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ India was organised with the help of the cultural ▓▌
▓████▓▌ service at the French Embassy in New Delhi and his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ album was recorded with the support of the French ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical copyright association SACEM. Indians have ▓▌
▓████▓▌ been enthusiastic about the revival of their ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical heritage, too. Sushmita, a young woman who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ works in an advertising agency in Delhi, raves ▓▌
▓████▓▌ about Pascal of Bollywod's album in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ accompanying press dossier, remarking that "without ▓▌
▓████▓▌ knowing it, Pascal has filled a void that no-one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ knew was there until he came alongà These songs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ either didn't exist on records in India or, if they ▓▌
▓████▓▌ did, they were of the most awful quality ▓▌
▓████▓▌ imaginable." ▓▌

▓████▓▌ One of the reasons behind Pascal's success in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Indian sub-continent is his quirky French accent û ▓▌
▓████▓▌ which must bring as much of a smile to Indian lips ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as Petula Clark and Jane Birkin's quaint English ▓▌
▓████▓▌ accents does to French ones! And yet the exotic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ charm of his songs will undoubtedly weave its own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ spell on European audiences, too. "The thing I love ▓▌
▓████▓▌ most about this style of music is the way it ▓▌
▓████▓▌ communicates joy," he says û and there's no denying ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that a rhythmic dance track like Jalwa Jalwa could ▓▌
▓████▓▌ easily take European dancefloors by storm. When ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pressed on the subject, Pascal replies that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "remixes are not out of the question, of course." ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The practice, a highly common one in India, could ▓▌
▓████▓▌ well impart a whole new dynamic to the Pascal of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bollywood album currently enjoying great success as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ background listening at French 'soirΘes' and dinner ▓▌
