Known throughout the world of independent rap for his production
skills, J. Rawls has built tracks for Mos Def and Talib Kweli and El
da Sensei plus his day job, Lone Catalysts, with J. Sands. "The
Essence Of J. Rawls", his first solo album, featured guests J-Live,
Doseone, and Asheru, among many others. "The Essence Of Soul"
followed in 2005. Rawls went on to release "Liquid Crystal Project"
in 2006 and "Rawls and Middle" in 2008.
While J. Rawls may be better known for his contributions to Mos Def
and Talib Kewli's "Black Star" project, he is also the beatmaking
half of the underground Cincinnati duo Lone Catalysts (which also
includes lyricist J. Sands). With his jazzy mood music in tow, J.
Rawls stepped out with his first solo project, "The Essence Of J.
Rawls" in 2001. This compilation is an underground gathering of like
souls, which includes J-Live's storytelling expertise on "Great Live
Caper", the African terminology of Unspoken Heard's Asheru on
"Nommo", J. Sands and Grap Luva's "Check The Clock", and Rawls'
whimsical solo cut "They Can't See Me". While Rawls' laid-back
compositions (with their piano samples and minimalist guitar riffs)
are both provocative and passionate, pretentious hip-hop fans seem
likely to overlook his keen musical sensibility, largely because it
is neither abrasive nor mind-altering.
In February of 2001, a young up and coming producer by the name of J
Rawls released his first album titled "The Essence Of". The seminal
album from the producer who would go on to produce for the likes of
Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Beastie Boys, Us3 and many more featured a
myriad of guests from the burgeoning underground hip hop scene. The
album would go on to become a favorite among beat enthusiasts and
lyric heads alike.
In accordance with Record Store Day 2016, Rawls now re-release this
classic on vinyl only with brand new added previously unreleased
bonus songs recorded around the same as the songs from the album.
The bonus songs include never before heard material from Talib
Kweli, Makeba Mooncycle, Doseone, Rubix, Wordsworth and more. The
album also features a new cover and new artwork taken from the same
photo sessions as the original album.
Hands down, one of the dopest underground gems of the 2000's.
