"Smoking more weed than a Rastafarian" is crucial to rapper/producer Madlib's art, 2000's The Unseen putting this method into inspired practice. Speeding his voice up to hellum-esque pitch, 'Lib plays a mischievous homeless hoodlum lost in the fearsome, violent environment conjured up by the chaotic but masterful blizzard of blaxploitation blare, liberated out-jazz groovesm and the most ribald and
surreal moments from old Redd Foxx and Mobs Mabley "Laff" records. Consider Quas a Fat Albert for the hip hop generation, the album's mood shifting queasily from hilarious to eerie to chilling, a symphony with attention deficit disorder and often-overlooked layers of irony, revealed through repeated close listening. And in Quasimoto, the wayward weed-head who terrorises record shop owners stocking
