Release Notes:
Hollywood is a really weird place. I mean, this may seem pretty
apparent if you have ever walked its filthy streets, trying to
find the pretty people who seem to visit but don't really live
here. It feels that vacant sometimes when it comes to seeing a
good band. Everything here is done for label showcases and
shorter-than-usual performances to fit into the A&R guy's
schedule. Everyone is a player in this universal dream of "Making
IT".
Well, let's take a look at yet another Hollywood band, another
chance for my jaded cynicism to be proven painfully correct. But,
wait; this isn't what I was expecting. This is not just a comeback
project for an old punk from a band that no one heard of. This is
the second coming of a great musician, a great front woman, and
the opportunity for a great trio to shine on record like they do
in the club. The Anubian Lights are all these things and more (and
none of the negative things I listed previously).
The Anubian Lights may have started in 1995 as an instrumental
duo, and they may have joined up with the infamous Lydia Lunch for
a bit in 2002, but all of this is preamble to the present, to this
smoking hot slab of plastic and polymers in my CD player as we
speak. "Phantascope" is a completely surprising mix of goth,
disco, funk, and the above mentioned no wave of Lunch. Only now,
the boys of the Anubian Lights have been joined by another
feminine luminary of the rock-n-roll world of NYC. That luminary
is the extremely talented Adele Bertei, original keyboardist of
James Chance and the Contortions, now a writer and director of
film and television in good ol' Hollywood. See how life is so
cyclical, it is amazing. Adele Bertei shouldnÆt be thought of as a
Lydia Lunch Lite though, giving her own sense of dynamics, tension
and theater to the lyrics.
The Anubian Lights deliver a powerful blend of soundtrack-
influenced music that doesn't seek to be used on any soundtrack.
Every piece is complete in itself, with an almost tongue-in-cheek
lyricism and a definite ability to not take itself too seriously,
without being needlessly silly. Let's just settle on calling it
ironic and be done with it. Actually, let's just call it amazing
and never be done with it.
Long may the Anubian Lights shine! (indieworkshop.com)
