From exotism to exotica. A thin red line running through 20th
century western music, classical and popular, is only visible at
the highest resolution. It is known as exotism: the borrowing or
use of musical materials that evoke distant places or alien frames
of reference. Exotic does not mean merely distant; the suggestion
of strangeness is the overriding factor. Exotism is driven by
globalisation: musicians in many parts of the world today are only
able to produce a marketable art by exoticising oneself and one's
     culture.
Beginning at the start of the last century with french composer
Claude Debussy, who incorporated elements from Indonesian gamelan
and spanish court music in his symphonic mood poems, exotism
zigzags through the music of Europe and the Americas via Manuel de
Falla, Maurice Ravel, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Miles Davis and John
     Coltrane.
The 1950's saw a boom in 'armchair travelling' and the beginnings
of mass tourism. The music of Les Baxter, Martin Denny and Arthur
Lyman brought adventurous shores to the maudlin monotony of
post-war suburbia. The glory days of the resulting style, exotica,
were washed away by The Beatles and the so-called British invasion.
In the early 21st century the avant-garde of yesteryear has become
the mainstream of today. Primitivism has prevailed over academic
values. Bar pure undiluted folk for the preservationists, there is
hardly any music being produced today that does not incorporate at
least some token of alien origin. From a trickle to a stream, the
exception has become a rule. Exotica is here to stay.

Fresh Moods - Rhythmbreeze (Spy Mix)
The lead track of Fresh Moods' second album, "Swerve" (Electrolux),
is a reworking of a track from their eponymous debut, blurring
     genre bounderies, electro lounge, anyone?

     Syncromatic Dubsters - Querida Cubana
Jamaican dub and german electronica, the twin pillars of current
popular music, fuse in this exotic fantasy, adding new meaning to
the word 'vibes'. From The Dubsters debut album, "Tornado Warning"
     (Electrolux).

     A Reminiscent Drive - Ambrosia
Alanski's second album (F Communications) as a Reminiscent Drive
brings the Algarve to the North Sea shores.
File under: french impressionism/Bach meets Bacharach.

     Chicane - Low Sun
This track of Chicane's second album, "Behind The Sun" (Epic),
catches the international hit producer tipping his hat to the
godfather of all things balearic: ash ra temple's Manuel
     Goettsching.

     Chaser - Changing Minds
A truly transatlantik crossover (Dane versus Yank) by way of
Glasgow. From Chaser's initially overlooked debut album, "Game
On!" (Soma), this brings bird calls and velvet strings to the dub
     experience.

     Nacho Sotomayor - Electro
Sotomayor's "La Roca" album (House d'Arret) offers the original
sound of Ibiza in sun-dried pastel. It's the perfect score for
     anyone's holiday video's.

Kings Of The Wild Frontier - Our Girl In Havana
The Sound of Trinidad's oil drums come courtesy of two
marbleskinned Brits. An original from the "Love Making Music"
compilation (Dust 2 Dust) and guaranteed to loosen up the joints
     (pun intended)

     Marzipan + Mustard - 6711
Treatments by Monte Larue originally released on M+M's 1996 debut
album "Fuze" (Millenium), and morphed into a dub as deep as the
Manilla trough. The original is included in the unmixed vinyl
     version of this compilation.

Don Carlos - The Sun Is Shining
The Italian connection: this is one of the many exclusive tracks on
"Chill Out CafΘ Quattro" (Irma) and a staple of the Riva sets.
This is new exotica at its finest.

     Deadly Avenger - Malpaso
A lost germ made available again. This track from the long-deleted
"Coney Island Baby EP" (DC Recordings) was intended for inclusion
on Deadly Avenger's debut album, which however was never released
     because of sample problems.

     Bang Bang - Tchin Tchin
Bang Bang's debut album "Je t'Aime Je t'Aime" (Yellow Productions)
offers lightweight popdance, plus four stunning instrumentals.
     This is one of them.

     Danmass - Roast
Dust 2 Dust's head honcho massimo in his Danmass guise. An original
from the first "Sunday Best" compilation, and rereleased on Danmass'
debut album "Form Freaks" (Dust 2 Dust)

     Riva - The New Economy
The first offering of yours truly follows the line-up of 50's exotica
pioneer Arthur Lyman: vibes and piano, plus additional guitar. The
one take piano solo is by Cees Schouten.

     Interloper - The One
Jon Ryman's 1996 album, "Augur" on Plink Plonk, ranks with the finest
techno albums ever. This b-side of last year's "He's Gone Away" EP
will be included on the upcoming "Six Dragons" album (Inky Blackness).
