▒▓██▓ Electro-pop is a genre that begs to be called boring ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ and cold. The hooks have to be more than a little bit ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ invigorating and the beats have to somehow further ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ what has already been made in order to draw attention ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ to the music itself. While this is true of most music, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ the realm of electronica has to work a little harder, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ since it lacks the benefit of fully organic ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ instrumentation. The humanity driving the music's ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ creation has to be worked at in order for it to be ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ actualized. When it is achieved, you have a rather ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ intriguing synthesis of organic feeling and tech-savvy ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ instrumentation. ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Labyrinth Ear have, with their new digital EP ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Apparitions, recorded a simultaneously simple and ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ convoluted work of pop music that also manages to ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ contain the aforementioned synthesis. At its core, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ this simply is a collection of bracing, enjoyable ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ electro-pop tracks, tied together by ghostly female ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ vocals. Although they present nothing revelatory to ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ the world, they can't really be faulted. The hooks are ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ memorable and the beats are danceable. At the same ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ time, simply by creating this kind of music they are ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ seemingly showing off influences that may prove to tie ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ this music to the band's apparent influences, thereby ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ making Apparitions a derivative work. It is too the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ band's credit that, on this 17-minute EP, their work ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ never truly becomes stale. ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Although this is a very danceable record, there is an ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ aura of melancholy running through Apparitions, one ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ which ties it to the work of icy chanteuse Karin ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Andersson (of The Knife and Fever Ray). Since this ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ mysterious gloominess, however, does not hold back the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ constant forward motion of the music. It allows for ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ the band to have an emotional reference point for ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ their dance music, forcing them to add feeling to ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ these otherwise potentially by-the-numbers songs. ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Although as pieces in themselves these songs ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ contribute nothing new to the world, there are moments ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ where you can see Labyrinth Ear's individuality shine ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ through. The intro to ôAmethyst Daysö crackles with ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ experiments with deconstruction and fractured ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ ambience, before breaking into a dynamic and dark ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ dance track. ôHumble Bonesö somehow manages to both ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ merrily bounce along to a jittery pop beat while still ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ exuding the feeling of sadness that is ubiquitious on ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ this EP. ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ The rather rote dance music of ôGoyaö unfortunately ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ prevents Apparitions from being quite as good as it ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ could be. Although it attempts to sound atmospheric ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ and sensual, it instead ends up sounding slightly like ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ warmed-over Brazilian Girls. Despite this misstep, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Apparitions is without a doubt an album worth ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ investigating upon its release. ░█▓▒
