Nubia - which nowadays is distributed between Northern Sudan and
Southern Egypt - has been a crossroads and a meeting place for
various facets of Africa for centuries. Enriched by many
migrations between rural and urban environments, Nubian music
flows along with time, unhurriedly. It is also characterized by a
clear separation between the sacred and secular repertoires.
Recorded during the Sudan Cultural Season at the Institut du
Monde Arabe in 1997, this album presents a tradition of
collective songs gathering men and women together. Sung by a
soloist answered by a hearty chorus, with percussion backup,
their songs express love, nostalgia and the desire to live in
peace.
