▓████▓▌ in need of an instant creedence-lending 60s ▓▌
▓████▓▌ reference point can conjure up the layered melodies ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of Phil Spector and The Beach Boys with a single ▓▌
▓████▓▌ swing of the mallet. Much easier than scouring the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Yellow Pages for a rental glockenspiel. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ There's enough of xylophone and overlapping vocal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ melodies on Heaven and Hell, the new five-song EP ▓▌
▓████▓▌ by The Minus Story, to make Brian Wilson crack a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ drug-twisted smile when thinking about what this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ band owes to, well, Smile. Thankfully, The Minus ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Story's musicians do an excellent job melding their ▓▌
▓████▓▌ predilection towards vintage sounds - their ▓▌
▓████▓▌ self-described "wall of crap" - with a solid ▓▌
▓████▓▌ grounding in pop songwriting. More or less an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ extension their album The Captain is Dead, Let the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Drum Corpse Dance, Heaven and Hell is as good as ▓▌
▓████▓▌ anything out there by a band with essentially one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ album under its belt. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Ye ole' xylophone is front and center on "Hybrid ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Moments," which seems to attempt to bridge the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ distant generational gap between The Beach Boys and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The Flaming Lips and Radiohead. Replete with a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ synth drumbeat that lags behind the steady ▓▌
▓████▓▌ xylophone, the song places The Minus Story in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ same e-enabled company as Death Cab for Cutie, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bright Eyes, and the more recent versions of Modest ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Mouse. Stonger still is "Suffer by Yourself," a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sugary-sounding, harmonica-laden meditation on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Buddha's first Noble Truth. Dude, I'm totally ▓▌
▓████▓▌ enlightened - if not by the message of "Baby you ▓▌
▓████▓▌ were born to suffer by yourself" then by a melody ▓▌
▓████▓▌ so strong it warrants an acoustic B-side. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Three albums into the band's career - the first two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ were surely heard by no one beyond a close circle ▓▌
