Mr New York is back! Joe Bataan The Ordinary Guy is back on the
scene with "Call my name". Produced by Daniel Collas for
Vampisoul, the Spanish label specialized in great Latin
Soul/Funk reissues. What's amazing is that Vampisoul has brought
out a brand new release... and what a release! Joe Bataan formed
his band in 1965 and in 1967 began recording on Jerry Masucci's
Fania Records (the most important Latin Music label). In middle
70's he went over to Epic to co-found Merican/Salsoul, recording
Afrofilipino, Salsoul and in 1979 the very successful "Rap o
Clap o". Growed in Spanish Harlem, he played with various
Puertorican bands whilst refining all the time his own brand of
Soul with Afro-Cuban, R'n'B and Afrorican influences. During the
60's explosion of Boogaloo he invented Latin Soul which then
became Latin Funk and then Latin Disco. "Ordinary Guy", "Gypsy
Woman", "What Good Is A Castle", "Under The Street Lamp", "La
Botella" (Latin version of the great Gil Scott Heron's "The
Bottle"), are just some of his many hits! And now, after a gap
of 20 years, Bataan is back with an album recorded in New York,
on which time seems to have stood still. We're back in 1969! The
album includes 8 tracks; the sound is very fresh and maintains
his trademark vintage sound with the use of instruments such as
clavinette, Hammond organ, groovy bass, funky drums, Latin
percussion and Bataan's voice which, as always, exudes his soul!
"Call My Name", like all of Bataan's releases, goes from moments
of Latin Soul, "I'm A Fool" (Parts 1&2), passing by the pure
groove of numbers like "Chick-a-Boom", the first single, which
has already become a major success on groovy dance floors all
over the world, through to the 70's funky soul of "Call My Name"
and its Moogy sounds. Bataan's bright energetic music brings you
back to the mood of Spanish Harlem and tells us that Mr New York
is back and has never been in better shape. Thanks Vampisoul.
