██▓▓ Rotterdam's Jocham Paap has had a production ██▓▓
██▓▓ career with more twists and turns than an ██▓▓
██▓▓ electric eel. From providing the beats and ██▓▓
██▓▓ scratches for a local hip hop outfit in the ██▓▓
██▓▓ late 80s (where the name 'Speedy J' stuck) ██▓▓
██▓▓ to becoming a member of techno's hierarchy ██▓▓
██▓▓ through gilt-edged dancefloor releases on ██▓▓
██▓▓ Richie Hawtin's and John Acquaviva's Plus 8 ██▓▓
██▓▓ and Warp to ripping the rule book to pieces ██▓▓
██▓▓ via his jigsaw sound puzzles on novamute and ██▓▓
██▓▓ subsequently returning to the floor once ██▓▓
██▓▓ more for 2002's 'Loudboxer' opus and current ██▓▓
██▓▓ 'Collabs' (2004) 12" co-productions, he has ██▓▓
██▓▓ steadfastly furrowed his own path of sonic ██▓▓
██▓▓ exploration. ██▓▓
██▓▓ A perennial outsider, for over fifteen years ██▓▓
██▓▓ now Speedy J has refused to play by the ██▓▓
██▓▓ rules. Always keen to question, strip away ██▓▓
██▓▓ the superfluous and develop new and often ██▓▓
██▓▓ intriguing lexicons, Speedy J remains an ██▓▓
██▓▓ anomaly, a maverick, one of a select band ██▓▓
██▓▓ prepared to explore the stratospheric ██▓▓
██▓▓ possibilities of future technology and push ██▓▓
██▓▓ electronic music towards its logical (and ██▓▓
██▓▓ illogical) conclusions. His desire to tread ██▓▓
██▓▓ new paths has witnessed astonishingly ██▓▓
██▓▓ different landmarks. His early 90s 12 inch ██▓▓
██▓▓ releases on Plus 8 provided us with the ██▓▓
██▓▓ Chicago-Detroit jack siren fusion of ██▓▓
██▓▓ 'Pullover' whilst his first two long play ██▓▓
██▓▓ outings on Warp 'Ginger' and 'G Spot' were ██▓▓
██▓▓ master classes in the intricacies of smooth, ██▓▓
██▓▓ gliding techno and lush electronic ██▓▓
██▓▓ soundscapes. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ However, since he hooked up with novamute in ██▓▓
██▓▓ 1996 Jochem Paap's imagination has, quite ██▓▓
██▓▓ literally, run riot. If what had come before ██▓▓
██▓▓ was of little surprise for a techno producer ██▓▓
██▓▓ at the top of his game then 'Public Energy ██▓▓
██▓▓ No.1' (1997) was a total shock to the system ██▓▓
██▓▓ for both Speedy J and techno. Dripping with ██▓▓
██▓▓ atmospherically charged organ washes, the ██▓▓
██▓▓ album weaved it's way through a series of ██▓▓
██▓▓ disjointed beats and industrial sound ██▓▓
██▓▓ effects. Dense, abstract, disturbing, yet ██▓▓
██▓▓ ultimately rewarding, the album drew on very ██▓▓
██▓▓ little for influence and set it's own ██▓▓
██▓▓ musical agenda. At times funky, at times ██▓▓
██▓▓ industrial and in places distinctly dubby ██▓▓
██▓▓ Speedy J had confounded expectations and ██▓▓
██▓▓ blown the rule book to smithereens. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ By late 1998 Speedy had returned to his home ██▓▓
██▓▓ studio to work on initial ideas for his ██▓▓
██▓▓ fourth LP, 'A Shocking Hobby'. Satisfied ██▓▓
██▓▓ with the ground he had covered on his last ██▓▓
██▓▓ LP, he once again embarked on a ██▓▓
██▓▓ self-contained voyage of discovery. Hazy and ██▓▓
██▓▓ with a dream-like fog enveloping many of the ██▓▓
██▓▓ tracks, the album shimmers with an ██▓▓
██▓▓ un-worldly charm. Softer and more luxurious ██▓▓
██▓▓ than 'Public Energy No.1' it's ambient ██▓▓
██▓▓ washes and half remembered beat sequences ██▓▓
██▓▓ feel somehow more extreme than the all out ██▓▓
██▓▓ brutality of it's predecessor. As a brave ██▓▓
██▓▓ new step Speedy was by now set adrift in a ██▓▓
██▓▓ musical universe all of his own. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ For 2002s 'Loudboxer', Jochem Paap returned ██▓▓
██▓▓ to the more club friendly rhythmic patterns ██▓▓
██▓▓ of techno producing work that could more ██▓▓
██▓▓ comfortably sit within a DJ set (well as ██▓▓
██▓▓ comfortable as a blistering Speedy J techno ██▓▓
██▓▓ track can be!) From his superlative remix ██▓▓
██▓▓ work to his current 'Collabs' series of ██▓▓
██▓▓ dancefloor EP co-productions with the likes ██▓▓
██▓▓ of Adam Beyer, Literon (Gert-Jan Bijl) and ██▓▓
██▓▓ Chris Liebing Speedy J refuses to stay ██▓▓
██▓▓ still. With a long history of live ██▓▓
██▓▓ performance through his days playing the ██▓▓
██▓▓ Megadog tours, European festivals and the ██▓▓
██▓▓ international club circuit it is somewhat ██▓▓
██▓▓ ironic that for a man who gained his name ██▓▓
██▓▓ for his lightening prowess behind the decks, ██▓▓
██▓▓ as a techno artist Speedy J only plays live. ██▓▓
██▓▓ But what a live set. Blistering towers of ██▓▓
██▓▓ industrial noise, alien frequencies strafing ██▓▓
██▓▓ the airwaves and a twisted funk all of its ██▓▓
██▓▓ own. Little wonder he's Rotterdam's most ██▓▓
██▓▓ requested sound export. ██▓▓
