With his latest 12 inch vinyl release, Distinct Stance, dev79 takes an
exploratory musical journey while always maintaining a foundation in raw
hip hop style, whether easily identifiable or subconsciously evident.
The album is based around broken beats and an abstract hip hop feel, in
the course of which you will encounter hypnotic collages of sound that
incorporate dirty rhythms, deep sub bass, and a good dose of distorted
drones and glitches.

Dev79?s Distinct Stance is a record well worth investigating.
Released through US label Zenapolae, the 12? features a challenging mix of
hip-hop and abstract electronics.

I think this is "cleaner" than the 7" I reviewed a little while back.
It's still all crazy, "broken-noise-math-hop" as they like to call it, but
he seems to be utilizing open space more, which gives him more room to
breath and experiment. The beats themselves aren't too odd of noises,
in fact, they see, to invoke those sounds of early 90's rap, but then it
gets scattered, tweaked, and mushed with computer glitch and weird synth
noises. Strictly made for the head, this isn't going to do much for the
dancefloor, but I do like the massive amount of low-end, which is usually
lacking in this style of music. There's one track where this guy raps
straight for like 10 minutes on some crazy tangent.
