Release Notes:
Egyptian born and North American based artist, Omar El Gamal,
has garnered quite a reputation for himself in the underground
progressive scene. A professional swimmer, El Gamal's adopted
home in Quebec saw him fall in love with dance music via
Montreal nightlife. A DJ in clubs across the city, production
work soon followed for the likes of 3rd Avenue, Stripped
Digital and Balkan Connection. A regular for Particles since a
2014 debut, "But Her Bubble" showcased El Gamal's distinctive
skillset with three tracks of impressive quality. "Hacienda"
followed in November of the same year as the "Escoz Me/June
Gloom" EP now continues Omar El Gamal's association with the
label, backed by two remixes from Norway and Argentina. "Escoz
Me" is characterised by strong beat and flowing, modulated pads
that weave an undulating path against a rich bass line.
Syncopated percussion follows a hi-hat laden path as a glassy
riff repeats hypnotically from the mid-point onwards before
joining with all track elements in the third movement to strong
effect. "June Gloom" continues its predecessor's make-up as
textured pads create an eerie soundscape, reminiscent of the
dawn mist of an early summer morning. A grooved bass line makes
its presence felt as intelligent chord progressions and
delicate sequenced motifs provide a dynamic energy underneath
the aural melange. Part of a contingent of underground dance
producers coming out of his Scandinavian homeland, Norwegian
producer, Espen, has found himself the product of considerable
success. A regular on Lost Language, Vapour and Armada, he also
found himself on Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance"
compilation in 2005. A move into slightly darker waters saw
continued success through the likes of the iconic Looq imprint
as Baroque, Silk Music and Mango Alley continued to provide
high-profile hosts for his unique brand of music. Making his
Particles debut, the Espen remix of "Escoz Me" sees a throbbing
bass and strong beat, tempered by subtly cadenced percussion
and a delightful sequenced riff that shimmers in the upper
frequencies, playing tribute to Omar El Gamal's work. The
textured pads of the original also make their presence felt in
a rich tapestry that is a fine and innovative reworking. An
accomplished guitarist of teenage years, Argentinean, David
Calo, found himself drawn to the world of dance music,
influenced by such iconic names as John Digweed and fellow
countryman, Hernan Cattaneo. A DJ of repute, appearances
alongside the like of Wehbba and Spektre provided foundations
for a production career that has seen a considerable rise in
fortunes since a 2012 debut for Axon. Tulipa, System and
Sudbeat have all featured Calo's original work in their
catalogues while a remix for, and appearance on the
"Transatlantic" EP for Scotty.A, have hit Proton Music in 2015.
Now debuting on Particles, a remix of "June Gloom" sees David
Calo's trademark deep, tech infused sounds push Omar El Gamal's
work in new directions. Retaining the essence of the textured
pads that feature so heavily in the original, Calo's work
brings a rich bass groove, hypnotic beat and reverb-drenched
spot effects into sharp relief. Lighting up the "June Gloom",
Espen and David Calo shine a new light on Omar El Gamal's work.
