The year was 1989 and Daniel Kuypers was busy skateboarding on
the streets of Chicago and listening to the likes of hip-hop
legends The D.O.C., Biz Markie, and Marley Marl. By 1995, his
passion for hip-hop drove him to turn in his skateboard and pick
up a turntable. Kuypers spent the next five years collecting
records and listening to mainstream rap music evolve from what
he considers to be ôclassic hip-hop,ö to ôcommercialized
rubbish.ö With this sentiment came a desire to create his own
music.
In the year 2000, motivated to ôàmake music that I like, and
work with emcees that are honest and speak on what they live,ö
Kuypers got his hands on an MPC2000, the hip-hop producersÆ tool
of choice. Daniel Kuypers became Chester Copperpot. Drawing
inspiration from a diverse taste in music ranging from Duran
Duran and The Police, to DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier,
he began to craft his own hip-hop. Copperpot then teamed up with
some skilled local turntable specialists, joining Lord Dubious,
Sayne, Flim Flam, Chuck Sunshine, and Dj Sapien in the group The
Phonograph Scientists.
After a few years of throwing parties and playing shows locally
and nationally with The Scientists, Copperpot was ready to
produce his first single. He teamed up with Chicago emcees
Bamski The Bigot and Iomos Marad for his first release entitled,
ôChapter Seven, Verse One: Chester Copperpot Presents Bamski The
Bigot,ö which was to be the first single from his album,
ôChapter Seven.ö ôI was broke and about to declare chapter 7
bankruptcy, thatÆs why I named it æChapter 7,Æö explains
Copperpot, ôThe only income I had was my poker winnings, and I
was spending that on studio time.
Copperpot teamed up with local independent record label and
talent magnet EV Productions for his second release entitled,
ôChapter Seven, Verse Two.ö The local success of his first
single and a desire to reach beyond The Windy City took him to
London to work with UK emcee Braintax. This collaboration, along
with appearances by Chicago mainstays Profound, LongShot, and
Diverse, make up this second single.
With the release of his first full-length album, ôChapter
Seven,ö slated for late summer of 2004, Copperpot is
anticipating a productive summer. ôI just want to keep making
music,ö says Copperpot, ôand I will, even if I go broke doing
it.ö
