│ It's unfortunate to think that many people hearing Some By │
│ Sea's debut album will make a comparison to indie-darlings │
│ Death Cab for Cutie and leave it at that. It's true that │
│ Some By Sea's style of indie-pop resembles that of Death │
│ Cab, and more true that singer Chris du Bray's vocal style │
│ is very similar to Death Cab's Ben Gibbard. But give Get │
│ Off the Ground if You're Scared a few more listens, and │
│ you're likely to uncover hints of desperation to the tone │
│ underlying this light music, a wealth of sounds brought by │
│ synths, organ, cello, melodica, and more, and the pristine │
│ pleasure that listening to these songs can bring. │
│ │
│ Because Death Cab didn't, after all, invent a genre; that │
│ band just polished it, and if Some By Sea fits into the │
│ same genre, that's not this five-piece's fault. The songs │
│ on Get Off the Ground are nearly perfect, rich in tone and │
│ vocals, light in style but introspective in mood. And I │
│ have truly fallen in love with this album, often listening │
│ to it on repeat. │
│ │
│ Album opener "There's a Line in the Sand. Are You Afraid │
│ to Cross It?" is softer, rich with cello and gorgeous │
│ backing vocals from Rachel Bowman. The vocals, "Each day │
│ there's a problem / I'm not the answer," are sung with a │
│ kind of pleading quality that's endearing. "(These) Actors │
│ and Actresses, They'll All Die Soon" is another lovely │
│ track, riding shimmering, perfectly produced synths and │
│ gorgeous vocals that seem to tell a story of trying and │
│ failing. The acoustic guitar and haunting cello lends "The │
│ Winter Rush" a decidedly more powerful feel. The stark │
│ vocals on "How Far is Far Enough?" accompanied by just │
│ piano is almost heart-wrenching, especially as du Bray │
│ sings, "and we'll drive for days," drawing out the last │
│ word. The album closes with "Walk a Straight Line, Keep a │
│ Straight Face," a very stark album with plaintive male and │
│ female vocals and soft acoustic guitar and piano, until │
│ the song picks up with cello and drums. Lovely...the │
│ perfect ending. │

│ Many songs here are more upbeat, such as the sparkling │
│ "Paaale Wonder w/ Dark Eyes," and the sing-along chorus on │
│ "All of This," which belies the song's more moodier │
│ undertone. With more upbeat percussion, "A Steady Diet of │
│ Stares" is pretty while light-feeling, and a textured │
│ chorus of what sounds like seven or eight singers is a │
│ perfect touch. It's also the perfect point in the album to │
│ lighten the tempo up a bit. The vocals are never stronger │
│ than on the more rocking "This Spot is Reserved," and │
│ │
│ Listening to Get Off the Ground if You're Scared often │
│ puts me in an introspective mood, filling me with a │
│ wonderful sense of melancholia. And that's not to say the │
│ music here is sad, but the band perfectly conveys the mood │
│ of these songs through tone and lyrics. There's plenty of │
│ variation here to interest me for repeated listens. In │
│ short, Some By Sea sounds like a band that's been playing │
│ for years, not one formed in 2003, and every listen to Get │
│ Off the Ground is sure to spawn a new favorite track to │
│ embrace. I was taken by surprise with this one, and now I │
│ can't get enough of it. │
