Chloe Recordings announces the first collaboration between
Jason Kahn and Jason Lescalleet, a live performance from the
famed Red Room in Baltimore, MD.

Jason Kahn, a native of Los Angeles who lives in Switzerland,
has been in overdrive recently, putting out new recordings both
solo and in collaborations on a wide range of labels (including
his own, Cut), and performing all over the world. Jason
Lescalleet of Maine is one of the most unique composers and
performers in electronic music; on stage he creates textures of
unbelievable sensitivity and power using old reel-to-reel tapes
and Casios, while creating mastering magic both for his own
     recordings and for others.

This disc contains some of the warmest music I've heard. It
wraps you in a sound blanket you won't want to shake off. It's
a message of love to the Red Room and the people who fill it.

     ---------------------------------------------------------------
"A brilliant and beautiful album taken from tapeloop and
percussion duos by Jason Kahn and the amazing Jason Lescalleet.
For "Red Room", which appears as a tribute to the Baltimore
performance space of the same name, Lescalleet editted out any
gestures that the two made which could be easily attributed to
either of them. So what you get is a monolithic hum with few
distinct events, just an overall feeling that is as compelling
as it is hard to describe. The effect is not at all like
"improv", and also not like much else that I know of...
     incredible, and very highly recommended."

"Usually I put in a CD, press the play button and wait for
what's to come. I usually don't look at the record very much,
or read the press blurb. So I knew I had a CD on Jason Kahn and
Jason Lescalleet, but was clueless wether this was a live
recording or some studio/mail collaboration. I assumed Kahn was
in his usual laptop/percussion mode and Lescalleet on his
vintage reel to reel machines. To my surprise I learned that
Jason Kahn plays percussion here and an anlog synthesizer
(brand unknown) and Jason Lescalleet plays tapes and a Casio
SK1 and a Casio SK5 (for those unaware: very old, very low fi
sampling keyboards) and that the four tracks were recorded in
live at concert at the Red Room, Baltimore. Red is supposed to
have the lowest frequency in the spectrum of visible light.
Recordings of the audience are deliberately left inside this
recording, and form with the density of the music one thick
warm blanket. It's difficult to say what is what here, whose
producing which sound. Too bad of course if you want to find
out how an SK5 sounds like, but of course it's of no real
importance to know who is doing what. The four lenghty
improvisations are all equally thick and massive in sound and
might be classified as ambient. Well, or maybe improvisations?
OR? What it is exactely it's hard to say. It bears resemblance
of many different things (ambient, improvisation), but it
simply defies these descriptions and moves in perfect isolation
     itself. Great, thick air. (FdW)
