An attractive and varied collection of computer works from Canada using
algorithmic techniques based on the theories of chaos. Bruno Degazio's
'On Growth and Form' and 'Heatnoise' are highly dramatic, emotionally
charged pieces, as is Robert del Buono's 'Night Voices,' while Gustav
Ciamaga's 'Four Microclips' and John Celona's 'Pacific Rims' use similar
mathematics to make cooler, breezier music. Campbell Foster's 'Sheet
Metal Music' uses a physically chaotic system, a piece of amplified
sheet metal feeding back on itself, to produce some amazing sounds. John
Free's 'A Composition with John Cage' uses recursive processes to cut up
a radio broadcast by John Cage.
Starting off with Bruno Degazio's cinematic "On Growth and Form," this
disc is a long and varied ride through the sphere of algorithmic music.
Fractals, recursion, and chaos all figure into the equation at one point
or another as science and math are integrated more fully into the
musical process. Overall, synthesized timbres seem to dominate the
recordings. One notable exception is Campbell Foster's piece, which
takes a piece of sheet metal and produces feedback via a speaker and
microphone attached to the object. Another piece that stands out is John
Free's "A Conversation with John Cage." Again feedback becomes an
important element as a lecture and radio broadcasts are cut up,
juxtaposed and turned against themselves. The Devil's Staircase may
prove challenging for most listeners, but buried beneath the chaos you
