:: The French black metal scene can be proud of some really ::
:: original formations. However, although they are not walking ::
:: a well-trodden path, Malcuidant do not belong to the most ::
:: independent bands of this country. Anyway, this fact does ::
:: not indicate the quality of their music. The four-piece is ::
:: influenced by Scandinavian legions such as Azaghal or ::
:: Drephjard. It does not shy away from a few dissonant ::
:: fragments and rarely occurring meditative sequences, yet the ::
:: songs also offer galloping guitars and, to mention their ::
:: most characterising component, dense and quickly flowing ::
:: lava streams. Six tunes with a running time of 41 minutes ::
:: are always a challenge, for both the musicians and the ::
:: listener. However, the here presented warriors master the ::
:: difficult situation. Not always, but in most cases. Without ::
:: question, this is a recommendable album for fans of typical ::
:: black metal and its highlights show an unexpected maturity. ::
:: ::
:: While at first glance chaotic, slightly torn and overloaded, ::
:: a song like "Morts et merveilles" connects a lot of great ::
:: parts and grows with every new round. Expressed differently, ::
:: it takes some time to decode the formula of Malcuidant's ::
:: tracks. Conventional song patterns are frowned upon in the ::
:: conceptual world of the band. As a result, each song mirrors ::
:: many different moods. I am talking of desperation, grandeur, ::
:: vileness, hysteria and insanity, to name but a few. In most ::
:: instances, the individual parts connect seamlessly with each ::
:: other and the average speed is pleasantly high. Malcuidant ::
:: take us on a wild ride. I cannot recognize any detail of the ::
:: landscapes on both sides of the street, but this loss is ::
:: compensated by the mostly orgiastic velocity that expresses ::
:: the vitality of the band. The musicians mobilise all their ::
:: forces in order to achieve the maximum impact, but they do ::
:: not flex their muscles at the expense of musicality. In ::
:: addition, they have incorporated some triumphant, dark or ::
:: violent melody lines as well. Of course, they do not ::
:: reinvent the wheel, but I guess this is not necessary. I ::
:: have heard that wheels already exist. ::
:: ::
:: Be that as it may, the complexity of the music contrasts ::
:: with the simplicity of the cover. Nevertheless, both the ::
:: visual and the acoustic appearance of the album know how to ::
:: please. By the way, the raging six-pack profits from a ::
:: violent production. Fans of amateurishly recorded ::
:: underground metal will not get their money's worth. By ::
:: contrast, the majority of black metal supporters will enjoy ::
:: the generic sound and, of course, the songs themselves. ::
:: Despite or exactly because of some crude tones every now and ::
:: then, Malcuidant provide evidence that they have ::
:: internalized the essence of black metal. They avoid grave ::
:: mistakes and only few parts fail to convince. Listen to the ::
:: title track or dive deeply into "Les Flambeaux de guerre" ::
:: with its interaction of bestial and slightly melodic parts ::
:: and experience the pure motivation, the integrity and the ::
:: brute force of this untamed horde. You will not regret it. ::
