▓█ ░█ Message: PROPER of 05-06-2004: █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ VA-Zen_Connection_2-2CD-2004-SnS █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Album soft mixed ripped as unmixed with gaps █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ between tracks. █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ As the follow-up to a compilation regarded as █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ one of the highlights in an ever-growing █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ expanse of chillout albums, Zen Connection 2 █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ certainly has a lot to live up to. And this █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ is certainly not an easy task, especially █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ given the wide variety of styles and sounds █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ that are gelled together on the 2 CDs of this █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ collection. █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Taking a Yin and Yang philosophy as itÆs █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ inspiration, with CD1 more ambient than the █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ second more beat-driven compilation, the two █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ CDs take you on a journey to the far flung █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ corners of our musical world, stopping briefly █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ everywhere beats, ambient sound scapes and █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ grooves can be found. It is certainly no █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ coincidence that this album is being released █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ at this time of the year in Australia, and █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ with the promise of warm days and sultry █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ evenings, such a collection can easily become █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ the soundtrack to many of our lives. █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ So what of this one in particular? Is it any █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ good? After all, if youÆre anything like █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ me, there is a tendency for many of these █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ types of compilations to be more of a █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ background accompaniment than an upfront █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ all-immersing experience, which can mean at █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ times itÆs a little difficult to totally █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ differentiate one from another. I suppose █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ thatÆs where the advantage of actually █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ reviewing such disks comes in handy, forcing █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ me to actually give full attention to the █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ tunes coming through my speakers. And the █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ answer? Well on the whole yes. Whilst there a █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ certainly a number of highlights, they are █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ fairly spaced over the 2 CDs. This isnÆt to █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ say itÆs a bad thing. In fact, having one █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ track after another start with a æjeez, I love █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ this songÆ can be a little disruptive during a █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ twilight drink on the balcony with your █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ friends. Aside from the standouts from █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ S.L.A.C., Badmarsh & Shri, Stef (my absolute █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ favourite by a fair way and a local to boot), █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Ramasutra, and dZihan & Kamien, the rest still █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ flow nicely, if somewhat anonymously at time █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ into each other. █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ It must also be said that itÆs nice to see █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ such an album featuring a big dollop of new █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Australian music as well, showing there is a █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ lot more happening around the traps than many █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ of us would be aware of. In fact, the total █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ comes in at no less than 5 which is more than █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ worthy. █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Compiled by One World Music top dog Leigh █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Wood, Zen Connection 2 succeeds in █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ bringing together a very polished selection of █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ summertime chillout tunes from around the █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ globe, and although the first disk is probably █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ a little TOO ambient for my personal taste, it █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ is again amongst the better releases of this █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ type. With interesting and no real obvious █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ selections, it is a worthy successor to Zen █░ █▓
▓█ ░█ Connection. █░ █▓
