Jan Lundgren, who has mostly recorded American standards in his
career thus far, goes back to his roots on this set. He and his trio
interpret a variety of Swedish folk songs along with a couple of the
pianist's originals and a couple obscurities. The set is rich with
melodies but also swings as Lundgren, bassist Mattias Svensson, and
drummer Morten Lund first pay tribute to the themes and then dig
beneath the surface. What results is a fresh look at these songs for
listeners familiar with the pieces, and a widening of the potential
jazz repertoire for those who are coming across the simple and
beautiful themes for the first time.
