After opening with cloe locks marvellous EP last
year, seldomtype is now entering the next level of
experimental dancefloor music. And intuitively, the
label has chosen two activists of the web-scene for
this second release. In the red corner we welcome
Konrad Behr from Dresden, who already released
screwed warmhearted sound sculptures on the Osnabruck
minilabel Retinascan, and is as well acting as one of
the heads of the platform phonocake.org, in the blue
corner there is Sascha Mⁿller, who already had
several releases under the alias "pharmacom" und
whose discography presents besides toolish
techno-tracks also chipstyle and electro-tunes. On
seldomtype you can see them sparring with roles
exchanged: For the two a side songs "Kopfkissen" and
"August 2002", Bad Comfort is fetching some
Neodub-influences and is mixing them with his
trademark experimental ingredients und creates a
quicksilvery, soft and warm flow, that takes
songtitles literally (Kopfkissen meaning "cushion" in
German), evoking a lazy late-summer atmosphere
inmidst of winter. Moreover, he extrapolates an
almost poppy catchiness, that always was in his
music, but never really surfaced as much as on these
both tracks, that seem to point to a paradigmatical
change within his output, maybe caused by
crossgrading from Amiga towards PC and Buzz, but
nonetheless unveiling his personal likes of
clicks'n'cuts acts like Pole and Kit Clayton.
However, Behr achieves to hold the balance between
epigonism and uniquity, relying on his homegrown
musical repertoire of sounds and structures. Sascha
Mⁿller is taking the other way round. After visiting
the electronical mainstream in his past releases,
he's using exactly the same elements as before for
his b side, but reduces them to not much more than
hints of what they were, deconstructs loops und
leaves us behind in an unusually headstrong, but
still funky construction lot. Through the holes of
his music, he waves towards us, cheering us up to
develop new dances, whose history may puzzle
explorers from alien worlds to desparation in a
several thousand years. Both artists and especially
seldomtype as a label are taking a walk on unknown
ground with this release. They kick the
tool-orientated vinyl markets ass and try to show an
alternative beyond the straight bassdrum without
traiting the genre. Hopefully, this refreshment will
show some success. Mix this please!!
