The norwegian trio " in the country", was elected
"Young Norwegian Jazz Musicians Of The Year". This
happened at Molde International Jazz Festival, as a
part of a releaseprogram for young professionals
called Jazzintro 2004.
in the country mostly play originally written music.
The music is executed with use of space, sonority and
initiative. They make beauty and tenderness, but it's
often strange and cunning at the same time.
Inspirations to be mentioned are Paul Bley, Ornette
Coleman, Bobo Stenson og Kenny Wheeler. in the
country is also huge fans of singer/songwriters like
Dolly Parton, Damien Rice, Gram Parsons, Ryan Adams
and Bob Dylan.
in the country is making a norwegian tour and a debut
record release in april 2005.
The musicians:
Morten Qvenild (piano) Morten has studied with Misha
Alperin (Moscow Art Trio) at the Norwegian Academy of
Music. He has been engaged as piano player in the
Norwegian cult band "Jaga Jazzist". This cooperation
terminated with their last album "the Stix". He is
now part of duo "Susanna and the Magical Orchestra",
released on Rune Grammofon. Also released on Rune
Grammofon is "Shining"┤s third album, a progressive
artrockmonsterjazz quartet. Morten also plays with
"Solveig Slettahjell Slomo Quintet", with a Norwegian
Jazz singer who has recently received great critics
in Billboard Magazine. He is also part of a new big
pop band, the super group called "The National bank",
and was the former piano player with Nils Petter
Molvaer "Khmer".
Roger Arntzen (double bass) Roger is educated at the
Norwegian Academy of Music. He plays with "Damp", a
quartet with the norwegian guitar player Asbjorn
Lerheim and the young saxophone player Jorgen Munkeby
(Jaga Jazzist, Motorpsycho). They released the album
"Mostly harmless songs" in 2003. He also plays in the
band "Subtonic", a vocal featuring quintet with their
first album "In This House" at AIM Music, released
in Norway and Japan. Roger is also to be heard with
the German trumpet player Eckhard Baur┤s "Movements".
Pσl Hausken (drums) is the drummer in Tub Quartet, a
young norwegian band with the talented singer Hilde
Marie Kjersem. They have played a lot of
jazzfestivals in Norway, and they have just released
their first album "Red Shoes Diary" at Curling Legs.
He also plays in a improvisation - ensemble (L.U.N)
that works with dance as a big part of the
expression. To illustrate his width in work, it can
be mentioned that he plays an important part in the
great norwegian countryband " Crister Knutsen and the
sacred hearts".
