Welcome to chapter 2 of the Glⁿcklich-compilation series. This time
we are not only featuring fusion made in Germany, but we're also
extending our musical terrain to Europe's finest in jazz/fusion
with a Brazilian tinge.
First of we go Benelux with Sail-Joia, a band consisting of half
Brasileiros, half Dutchmen/-women. ╗Go For The Others½, with its
minimal bassline, features the Lameirinhas bros. on acoustic guitar
and bass, Shawn Bergin on soprano sax and well-known session man
Nippy Noya on percussion.
Next up is Cuban percussionist Nicos Jaritz and his Austrian
compa±eros with a cooking, rootsy batucada entitled ╗Otπo E Eu½.
This 1985 production is still a favourite of both jazz and house
dj's. With chords reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders' "Upper Egypt
Lower Egypt" we move on:
╗Nil½ is the tune and percussionist Heinz von Moisy the artist. It
features Carlo Domeniconi on acoustic guitar and Manfred Burzlaff
on vibes laying down great harmonies. Murzlaff has not only been
popular for his excellent vibraphone playing but also for his truly
progressive hairstyle on the backcover of their 1977 LP ╗Las
Plantas½ , of which ╗Nil½ is lifted from. Bad!
Fender, yeah Fender! And Monika Linges! Mr. Circle from a place
called Aachen in Germany and something called ╗Schoch-Schach½ which
rides all the way through! Monika Linges and her vocal talents have
recently been rediscovered and reactivated by none other than
Nobukazu Takemura on his excellent ╗Child's View½ LP. Also worth to
mention is Mikesch van Grⁿmmer, band-leader and keyboarder, who
doesn't turn up on many recordings, but when he does he certainly
lets you know that he's in business. Check his solo!
Ximo & Judy give us a bright funky samba with ╗Vou Vencer½, which
still has that certain ╗tristeza½, inherent to many Brazilian
compositions. This Brazilian duo was based near Frankfurt in the
early 80's and their band consisted of half Brazilians, half
Germans. Izio Gross, who also wrote the song, is on piano and
percussion.
Not exactly Brazilian but nethertheless beat-heavy quality: Klaus
Weiss and his percussion unit Niagara with the ╗Rhythm Go½. This
╗funky batucada½ or whatever you may call it, was recorded in 1972
and sounds way ahead of its time. Niagara's 3rd LP ╗Afire½ came out
on the seldom-seen Finger label. Their previous two LP's featured
well-known German rockstar Udo Lindenberg on drums!
The ╗Flying Carpet Ride½ is probably the rarest tune of this
compilation, as it never came out commercially. It was made for
radio/TV commercials/breaks only. The band is called Second
Direction and the soloists are Fritz Mⁿnzer with a lovely soprano
sax and Karl Heinz Merkel on Fender Rhodes, who gives us great
chords. A favourite.
We stick to the Fender and go to Switzerland with Emphasis, who
will take us to ╗Vera Cruz½ with their fine rendition of the Milton
Nascimento classic. ╗Vera Cruz½ has always been popular in terms of
being covered by other bands. Also check Jayme Marques' version.
Remember ╗Onkel Joe½ by Catch Up on Glⁿcklich Vol.1? Well, this is
the original all-organic version entitled ╗Tante Nelly½ (= aunt
Nelly), performed by pianist Joe Haider and his trio. Isla Eckinger
sets the bass and Allen Blairman is on drums. ╗Tante Nelly
originally came out in 1973 on ╗CafΘ des PyrΘnnΘes½ on Kick
records.
Hope this compilation gives you a deeper insight into Europe's
70's/80's jazz/fusion scene. Whether you listen to this at home or
play it out in a club, just bear in mind that this is not a
bootleg. There is no point in rereleasing original music without
