▓████▓▌ Atakora massif, and on the confines of Burkina Faso ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Togo, live various populations of farmers, most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of which are considered to be of very great ▓▌
▓████▓▌ antiquity. Those represented here are the Berba, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Dendi, the Dompago (or Lukpa), the Kotokoli (or ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Tem), the Pila, the Somba (or Ditammari), the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ TanΘka and the Yowabu. The music they practise is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as wide-ranging as it is varied, as can be heard in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this new album that completes those already ▓▌
▓████▓▌ released in the Prophet collection of music from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Benin (Prophet 10, 13, 26, 33). ▓▌

▓████▓▌ track 01: horn duet (berba) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Two men blow each into a hieni, a transverse horn, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ while a third plays a kienga, consisting of two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ clashing metal rings. Humuduruga ('He who is born ▓▌
▓████▓▌ will die one day'), the first part, is performed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ during a funeral. Pehemiatoka, the second part (at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 2'17) tells the story of a woman who, married too ▓▌
▓████▓▌ young, was incapable of fulfilling her household ▓▌
▓████▓▌ duties. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ course of which their posteriors periodically hit ▓▌
▓████▓▌ each other. Two songs follow in succession, one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ celebrating the exploit of Chianati, the village ▓▌
▓████▓▌ chief who was the first to take a plane to fly to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ France, the other recounting the arrival in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ village of a drill and, for the first time, of ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Alaza Boukary and Issaka MammatchirΘ are both ▓▌
▓████▓▌ farmers and players of the papo, an idioglott ▓▌
▓████▓▌ clarinet. The papo is constructed and is played ▓▌
▓████▓▌ after the millet has been harvested. The pipe, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ consisting of a millet stalk, has at one end a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ vibrating reed forming part of the stalk itself, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and near the other end a side hole. By alternately ▓▌
▓████▓▌ breathing in and breathing out, the musician, who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ holds between his lips the part of the pipe that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ has the reed, makes the air column vibrate as he ▓▌
▓████▓▌ uses his thumb on the side hole. calabashes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ suspended on either side of the pipe slightly alter ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the tone colour and the volume of the sound. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ with snare; an atremia, a single-skinned drum ▓▌
▓████▓▌ played with the bare hands; a dingo, a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ double-skinned armpit drum (of variable tension); a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ canton, a double bell with internal clapper; some ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lale, metal jingles; a dugassi, consisting of two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ superposed armpit drums, the larger on top of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ smaller; three hillara (wooden whistles). ▓▌

▓████▓▌ track 07: mekalo song (kotokoli) ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Tahirou Yaya Sarkifaoua is a Kotokoli singer who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ performs at markets, public meetings and on other ▓▌
▓████▓▌ festive occasions with a mekalo of his own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ invention. The instrument consists of the wooden ▓▌
▓████▓▌ body of an old German box camera, inside which are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to be found, on one side, a roll of documents glued ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and sewn together, and on the other, an empty roll ▓▌
▓████▓▌ (a receiver). Each roll is worked by an external ▓▌
▓████▓▌ handle. In the centre of the box, a large glass ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lens enables the 'film' to be seen as it is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ unrolled. As he sings, Yaya Sarkifaoua comments on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the images he displays, which refer to all sorts of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ events and political and religious figures from ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Africa and elsewhere - a kind of television news ▓▌
