▓ Fog has commonly been the title to singularly ▓
▓ represent Andrew Broder. That's all well and good, ▓
▓ but such roundness and flavor makes up their current ▓
▓ lineup, it'd be a shame to think it was one person ▓
▓ putting forth all the effort. Politics aside, this ▓
▓ Minneapolis act continues to put forth a group effort ▓
▓ live and on recordings after Ether Teeth endearingly ▓
▓ gnashed its way into our dedicated listening time. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ There is no one obvious concept that ties the new ▓
▓ full-length, 10th Avenue Freakout together, but ▓
▓ rather a variety of emotions and motivations that ▓
▓ drench each track with Broder's eccentric musical ▓
▓ vision. The maturity in the lyrics has ripened a ▓
▓ touch but just enough to be a bit more cohesive. ▓
▓ There are some mild surprises (like saxophonist ▓
▓ George Cartwright's cameo) here and there and the ▓
▓ track ("The Poor Fella") that seems least like Fog ▓
▓ still could be considered a huge accomplishment. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ It seems to be more of Fog's goal to harmoniously ▓
▓ tighten up each track and make them digitally shine ▓
▓ individually with less segueing to other tracks. The ▓
▓ opening track provides some buffering with its ▓
▓ staggering drum loop and musical outbursts. "We're ▓
▓ Winning" is somewhat anthemic and entertains with a ▓
▓ poignantly flippant aura directed towards pop-culture ▓
▓ and the like. The title track appears to represent a ▓
▓ piece of journal writing but is skewed with Broder's ▓
▓ witticisms. A very memorable and elegant line can be ▓
▓ found in "Song About a Wedding:" "I'm a tiny crab in ▓
▓ a tidal wave / I have no real complaints / and I do ▓
▓ have you to complain about it too," while it merrily ▓
▓ trots along in a similar fashion to their classic, ▓
▓ "Under a Anvil Tree." The rest of the disc is quite ▓
▓ refreshing and different, but really puts you in a ▓
▓ sort yea-or-nay voting situation. ▓
▓ ▓
▓ Compared to Ether Teeth, 10th Avenue Freakout has ▓
▓ more live drums and less sampling but with plenty of ▓
▓ ambient loops. Some of the compositions could be ▓
▓ compared to the side project Hymie's Basement, which ▓
▓ makes sense that it influenced future Fog tracks at ▓
▓ all. All in all, they curb dominant pretentious ideas ▓
▓ and make way for liberated experimental structure. ▓
▓ With some hit-or-miss moments, each track maintains ▓
▓ the loosely-sound standards of Fog. This album was a ▓
▓ good move towards their supposed desired direction to ▓
▓ be a solid, focused songwriting alliance. For those ▓
▓ not minding a more sober-minded Andrew Broder, 10th ▓
▓ Avenue Freakout represents a solid and well-managed ▓
▓ effort. ▓
