grand central's funky fresh few is a floating collective of up to
five people. funky fresh few born out of blackpool's original graf
crew, imperial arts, have had a long and colourful history.
like most of the uk's hip hop community the funky fresh few caught
the hip hop bug at an early age. from collecting streetsound's
electro tapes then moving on through break dancing to graffiti fff
have finally become bona fide hip hop producers.
after damon savage, the most notorious member of fff is alex,
known to his mates by his graf name - time. you may remember this
guy as he ended up being banned from every mainline br station in
the country after he got arrested a couple of years ago when the
police really cracked down on graffiti artists. after the dawn
raid on his house, he appeared in court and consequently in the
guardian, on tv-am and on radio 4. now, the boys have calmed down
and put all their energy into break hunting and sampling.
the boys hooked up with grand central via manchester's fat city
record shop. the boys were spotted buying hip hop imports by mark
rae - and after passing him a tape of their early work, mark
invited them to submit more tracks as he was thinking of starting
     up his own label.
the civilised surroundings of the fat city was a far cry from the
way fff used to buy their records. back in 1988 as hip hop reached
a peak in the uk, a young manc named andy madhatter used to go to
blackpool, and the surrounding areas, and distribute american
imports from the back of a van. both james and damon, then from
opposing crews, used to race each other down to andy's van after
school to check out the latest releases.
after moving on from break dancing and graffiti, damon acquired
his own decks - and the long journey to where they are now, had
begun. starting with a four track, the lads bought computers, the
akai mcp 60- the favoured drum machine and sequencer of the hip
hop community and their most prized possession, the akai 950
     sampler.
