The Pitch Black debut album Futureproof released in association
with with Kog Transmissions and Universal Music won best NZ
electronic album of the year at the bNet Music Awards in 1999.
Futureproof is the result of taking eighteen months of live
performance into the studio, distilling songs developed during
live gigs and refining them into finished tracks for release.
The album is a combination of refined listening moods with
some of the more intense sensibilities of live performance.
Our creativity primarily happens in a live environment and we
take that back into the studio and use it as the base to build
our compositions. When we're performing we arrange in real time
and have taken the same approach in the studio.
To keep the CD-listening lounge-dwellers happy while they cook up
another album, Pitch Black released Dub Obscura - a bonus disc of
5 remixes and a new Pitch Black track, Melt.
What's on the bonus disc
Local artists were invited to select a track or two and mix 'em up!
Mike and Paddy chose the remixers for their disparate range of styles
and broad approaches to the concept of sound manipulation and rhythm.
Remixes by Epsilon Blue a.k.a. Leyton - a man of many musical hats,
recently completed his debut album Waterland (another Kog release),
after playing live at dance parties for the last 5 years... Remixed
Speech twice over.
Borrower and Lender a.k.a. Andy Morton - one of the main Hip Hop
producers in New Zealand, the man who makes the beats for Che Fu,
King Kapisi and almost everybody you can think of... Remixed Soliton
I nternational Observer a.k.a. Tom Bailey and Rakai Karaitiana -
responsible for massively vibrant Sound System gigs, DJ'ing their
own tracks into epic sets, most recently a 4 hour marathon at
Beautiful Music's electronica celebration during New Zealand Music
Week... Remixed Speech
AKC Design a.k.a. Hayden Shalley - a new one to watch!
A drum 'n' bass delayed depth charger about to explode, rapidly
gaining a reputation for studio speaker shredding... Remixed Melt -
a wild take on Pitch Black's new track.
And finally, the new Pitch Black track - Melt "A dub version of a
work in progress" Melt picks up where Futureproof finishes. Expect
Melt to mutate into more forms on a stage near you.
On the development of the bonus disc Mike and Paddy said it's been
amazing watching live electronic music grow over the last year.
Hearing International Observer perform and continually mutate their
version of Speech is fantastic. We're really excited about hearing
other peoples take on our music.
Notes: Some tracks are mixed, but most of'em aren't. In that case we
decided to release this album in 2 unmixed cd's.
