y0,
Shotgun Justice are a heavy
metal band from Germany whose
latest release State of
Desolation marks their full-
length debut. Now, if you're
like me, you might be curious
what kind of sound a heavy metal
band called Shotgun Justice
would have. I mean, if you're
naming your band after one of
the most popular albums released
by the thrash legends Razor, it
might be because you like them
enough to try to sound something
like them. So before we go any
further, I'll just let you know
now that musically speaking, no
such similarities exist here. It
seems, if anything, that Shotgun
Justice took the name primarily
for lyrical reasons and nothing
more.
As to what they do sound like,
that's a tough one; I feel like
saying, ôThey don't sound like
Razor,ö but that would be a bit
of a cop-out. But to be honest,
that's about the best I can do.
This is primarily because they
don't really have a consistent
sound across the board. Not only
do the songs vary somewhat from
one track to the next, but even
within the songs themselves
there are some seriously jarring
changes that seem to come out of
nowhere and don't seem to serve
any real purpose.
The main reason that this is so
hard to place is that the vocals
are just, for lack of a better
word, off. There is something
not quite right with them. They
are on pitch as far as I can
tell, but they seem to be
overpowering in the mix and the
tone comes across as excessively
indulgent. There are a number of
tracks that start off with great
riffs (like ôHead Full of
Bulletsö), but then as soon as
the vocals come in, I just
myself wincing and wondering
what went wrong. But it's not
just the sound of the vocals
that rub me the wrong way
either, but also the melodies
themselves. They sound forced
and disjointed and don't mesh
well with the rest of the music.
And as long as we're on the
topic of things not meshing with
the music, I don't think I need
to elaborate on the strangeness
of the sudden interjection of
operatic female goth vocals that
make occasional appearances
here. Granted, they are not
frequent, but if the male vocals
are somewhat lacking, then the
female vocals are straight up
bizarre.
When it comes to the music
itself, it's the same problem
from the beginning to the end:
the riffs, the fills, and the
leads, all of them sound like
practice tapes made by
individual band members and then
spliced together at the end by a
studio technician intern. It's
not to say that the production
itself is bad, but rather that
the compositions themselves are
disorganized. The entire album
lacks any sort of continuity or
fluidity. And I totally get that
there are some genres of metal
that use disjointed features as
a way of enhancing the
compositions, and often with
great results. Some bands can
pull this off quite well and the
songs can still retain a
cohesive character, while other
bands just end up giving off
that pretentious proggy vibe.
But what makes this so weird is
that there isn't a single hint
of the progressive, look-Ma-
IÆm-pushing-the-envelope-with-
my-strange-time-changes feel to
this at all. Instead of being
intentionally strange, it just
sounds loose and sloppy. The
entire album is a group of
directionless and
incomprehensible compositions
that result in little more than
a taxing listening experience.
