░░ ░░
░░ In the mid-1970s, the contemporary jazz scene in Portland, Oregon was ░░
░░ about ten years ahead of its time. Fusion was dead or dying just about ░░
░░ everywhere else in the United States. But electric jazz musicians in ░░
░░ the Pacific Northwest forged ahead, making that area, the original ░░
░░ cradle of smooth jazz. Today, the names of musicians who stalked those ░░
░░ clubs in the Rose City reads like a smooth jazz primer-Kenny G, Jeff ░░
░░ Lorber, Patrick O'Hearn, Richard Smith, Tom Grant, and the subject of ░░
░░ this retrospective -- Eugene, Oregon native Dan Siegel. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ Ironically, the first record company to capitalize on the Portland ░░
░░ scene a quarter of a century ago was a small label in New York called ░░
░░ Inner City. First, they released two albums by Lorber and had some ░░
░░ success. But with Siegel's 1981 debut, The Hot Shot, the now defunct ░░
░░ label had a record that peaked in the upper reaches of many jazz charts ░░
░░ in national trade publications including the #1 slot in Radio & ░░
░░ Records. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ When smooth jazz radio stations began popping up all across America in ░░
░░ the mid '80s, many seminal but hard to find tracks that Siegel recorded ░░
░░ for other labels were automatically included in regular rotation, ░░
░░ particularly the last two tracks on this compilation, "Reflections" and ░░
░░ "Another Time, Another Place," both title tracks on their respective ░░
░░ original album releases. By the time Siegel reached major label success ░░
░░ with Epic in 1986, his music was a staple on the evolving radio format. ░░
░░ Selections from the albums Northern Nights and Late One Night were what ░░
░░ were called "instant adds" at smooth jazz stations across the country. ░░
░░ In retrospect, those tunes, especially the title track from the former, ░░
░░ and "Along The Way" from the latter, defined a growth period in ░░
░░ American culture, for as the smooth jazz phenomenon grew that decade, ░░
░░ Siegel's music was an increasingly important and integral part of it. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ Throughout the '90s, this talented graduate of the University of Oregon ░░
░░ not only continued putting out quality contemporary jazz music, but, ░░
░░ expanded his horizon with work in movies and television. Now, the ░░
░░ smooth jazz architect is breaking new ground with five fresh tracks for ░░
░░ the new century, and it's arguably the best work of his career. ░░
░░ ░░
░░ Four of the tracks definitely have smoldering grooves and modern ░░
░░ rhythms that push the smooth jazz envelope. Of particular note are the ░░
░░ tunes "What Gives," "From the Heart," and "Come What May." The lone ░░
░░ ballad out of the new quintet of songs is an elegant cover of the ░░
░░ classical song "Pavane" by Gabriel Faure, a beautiful piece that ░░
░░ showcases Siegel's strengths as an arranger and keyboardist. Siegel's ░░
░░ growth as a total musician is well documented on Along The Way: The ░░
░░ Best of Dan Siegel. It is a career compilation that will further cement ░░
░░ his place as a smooth jazz pioneer. ░░
