It's nice to see a band take the better elements of
its sound and run with it. Jess and the Ancient
Ones was initially part of the throwback occult
rock/metal explosion of a few years ago. Over this
and the past EP, the band has moved closer to a
full-on 60s rock band, leaving behind the heavier
aspects of its sound. As a metalhead, I'm saddened
in theory, but not in practice. This new, lighter
and proggier version of the band is much more
enjoyable. Much in the same way that Ghost has
perfected the sounds of yesterday, Jess and the
Ancient Ones feels like it could have come from
long ago.
Much like what makes Ghost work, Jess and the
Ancient Ones has a buoyant melodicism in these two
tracks. The rhythm section is due credit for this,
as the basslines and drum-work is very playful.
This feeling elevates the proceedings. Of course,
in any named band, vocalist Jess is the show-
stealer. Her impressive voice is especially
noteworthy. She has a solid range, but it's the
power behind her voice that is noticeable. She
doesn't carry these melodies; she owns them.
There is significant growth here on this short
two-song EP. Occult rock is at its best when it's
playful and catchy, as opposed to dense and dark.
The aim of this tour-only vinyl release is to tease
the band during its run with King Diamond. Even
though the pairing isn't as natural as peanut
butter and jelly, Jess and the Ancient Ones has
succeeded in showcasing the talent and potential it
has.
