"This self-released album by the L.A.-based Idaho
Falls ù a group led by vocalist/guitarist and chief
songwriter Raymond Richards (a member of Mojave 3
and the Sid Hillman Quartet) ù is a stylish Mojave
rock travelogue haunted by the ghost of Gram
Parsons. The organic production is lean and precise
and there are few, if any, overdubs. The tracks
alternate between rolling tumbleweed instrumentals
(think the Friends of Dean Martinez or Calexico) or
contain elements of various country subgenres,
including hillbilly, bluegrass, instrumental twang
and strum, Southwestern lounge, and Western-flavored
alt-country/indie rock, sounds favored by similar
L.A. groups like Beachwood Sparks and Wiskey
Biscuit. The plaintive weep of the pedal steel amid
sweet, mournful harmonies is particularly nice
throughout. Heather Goldberg, who contributes
mandolin and shares vocals throughout, has a
remarkable voice, as evidenced by the original
composition "Sunset Down." ù Bryan Thomas, AMG
