│ Thursday 24 October - Coldcut Recorded Live in Paris ││
│ ││
│ Coldcut are Ex-art teacher Jonathan More and computer ││
│ programmer Matt Black. From 1987 with debut single 'Say ││
│ Kids, What Time is it?' (the first sample-built record in ││
│ the UK) was released in 1987 to the development of their own ││
│ video sample software, VJamm, Coldcut have blurred and ││
│ challenged the rules of zentertainment. ││
│ ││
│ The duo originally teamed up in the mid-eighties, presenting ││
│ and DJing on their Solid Steel Show on the then pirate Kiss ││
│ and every Saturday night. In 1987 they defined the term ││
│ 'remix' after doing their version of Eric B and Rakim's ││
│ 'Paid in Full'. ││
│ ││
│ Their label Ninja Tune was germinated during a trip to Japan ││
│ in 1991 where Matt and Jon made a discovery: "We found a ││
│ book about cut-out-and-keep Ninjas. They were all about ││
│ artifice and hidden identity." The label has grown ever ││
│ since and now has a roster including The Herbaliser, DJ ││
│ Vadim and Wagon Christ (AKA Luke Vibert). ││
│ ││
│ They've released 4 albums, 'What's That Noise' on Tommy Boy ││
│ Music, 'Philosophy' (containing the ambient ballad 'Autumn ││
│ Leaves'), 'Let us Play'and their remix album 'Let Us ││
│ Replay'. ││
│ ││
│ As DJ Food their mix albums 'Jazz Brakes' and 'Recipe for ││
│ Disaster' respectively inadvertently laid the "seeds and ││
│ fertilizer for the thing which evolved into trip-hop" ││
│ recalls Jon) and almost by accident started the hottest club ││
│ in town. The launch party for 'Recipeà' at the Blue Note in ││
│ London was so successful that they continued with a monthly ││
│ residency: Stealth voted 'Club of the Year' in the NME, the ││
│ Face, and Mixmag. ││
│ ││
│ With Rob Pepperell as Hex, they've conducted multimedia ││
│ experiments, starting with the 'Top Banana' computer game. ││
│ In 1996, they developed 'Generator' for the Glasgow Gallery ││
│ Of Modern Art as well as 'Synopticon' for the JAM, a major ││
│ exhibit at London's Barbican. ││
│ ││
│ Around this time, Matt Black pioneered the concept of VJing ││
│ at diverse parties such as the legendary Telepathic Fish, ││
│ Sabresonic, and The Big Chill and began to envision what ││
│ became the VJamm software, later available for free with ││
│ their remix album 'Let Us Replay'. It allows the live ││
│ re-creation of whole audiovisual pieces, making video as ││
│ easily jammed or scratched as sound. ││
│ ││
│ The duo created a song on the internet in under an hour for ││
│ the BBC's "Tomorrows World", and played the Queen Elizabeth ││
│ Hall as part of John Peel's Meltdown. In March 2000 they ││
│ joined BBC London with a new show, every Monday night ││
│ between 12 and 2am comprising of a mixture of their own and ││
│ guest mixes. They are currently working on new software, ││
│ music and art installations. ││
│ ││
│ This is their 4th session for the programme. ││
