| They say that New York is the city that never sleeps. If this is |
| the case then Nottingham isn't quite so hardy. Sure, it sleeps - |
| just never at the right time. It's a legacy in provoked insomnia |
| that dates back over a decade to when a group of friends first |
| took a pair of decks and a bag of records to a house in the city's |
| Mapperley Park. While flads have floundered and music mutated, the |
| dedication of an ever-fluctuating Nottingham collective has |
| sustained a momentum through years of dancing in fields, barns, |
| quarries and clubs that few can argue with. Some might be so brave |
| as to call such hedonistic practices as a way of life. In reality |
| though what DiY first started to achieve all thise years back was |
| to pump new life through the veins of the city, installing a |
| heartbeat stronger than most - that of house music. |
| |
| When seeking new secret locations to dance under the stars began |
| to take its toll, an evolution occured that saw the possibilities |
| of DiY expand. They were now DJs with worldwide schedules and more |
| importantly a record label (Strictly4Groovers, and later DiY Disc |
| and Diversions) that would define the essence of just what they'd |
| always been about. |
| |
| The influences of such actions are still felt today. Having begun |
| to gain notoriety with their parties on the outskirts of Sheffild, |
| a similarly constructed collective named the Smokescreen Sound |
| System relocated itself a little further south, bringing with it |
| core members DJs Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley. Now two of the |
| world's premier underground producers, Ritchie and Riley (AKA |
| Inland Knights) continually supply dancefloors with the kind of |
| thrills others can only dream of through their releases on the |
| likes of Panhandle, 20/20, Doubledown and their own collective |
| Drop imprint. |
| |
| While they have met on a music technology course, Simon White and |
| Cal Gibson soon found they too shared the love of a house groove |
| in the great outdoors. After a collection of releases together |
| under different aliases, they finally settled on a name. Adopted |
| from their label of the same name, Neon Heights soon found infamy |
| for their slinky, off-kilter productions that bathed in the |
| essence of deep house, but still recalled fine moments in dub, |
| soul and disco history. Their 'A View From The Heights' album on |
| Glasgow Underground further cemented this reputation. Now with |
| Fug's Tom Bailey installed as a third member, the fullness of |
| their sound is becoming ever more apparent. |
| |
| Bizarrely, while press attention occasionally falls on current |
| hotbeds of house activity like San Francisco, Nottingham's |
| continued support, talent and love for the genre goes relatively |
| unnoticed. Infamously, long time DiY collaborator Charles Webster |
| (AKA DJ Profile) has links with both cities, having sent a series |
| of musical postcards from the West Coast in the 90s, cunningly |
| entitled Love From San Francisco. With a string of aliases under |
| his cap (including Furry Phreaks, Symetrics, Sine), a mammoth |
| discography and brushes with mainstream success with his Presence |
| project (featuring Shara Nelson), Charles has forged a reputation |
| as one of the most respected DJ/Producers on the planet. |

| No stranger to long-term connections, Neil Tolliday (now better |
| known as one half of Bent) first started to attract attention |
| when, as a fresh-faced 18-year old, his opus 'Cassiopeia' found |
| itself on the Warp-released 'Strictly4Groovers' album. After a |
| string of EPs for the label, Nail soon became the first artist to |
| release an album for DiY (the critically-acclaimed 'Big D's |
| Lounge'). While he now more famously explores diverse avenues, his |
| love of house has far from dissapeared, as the 2001 released 'A |
| Kitten' EP on Classic unequivocally proves. |
| |
| While Nail may have been the first to release an album, Schmoov! |
| have become the latest. Based around the trio of AndrΘ Bonsor, |
| John Buckby and Andrew Tytherleigh (and now featuring vocalist |
| Owen Rowe), they first whet people's appetites with their deep |
| anthem 'Destination'. Following releases on, amongst others, |
| Paper, Guidance and Soap, they finally released their first |
| long-player 'While You Wait' on DiY Discs in 2001. The subsequent |
| buzz and their electrifying live shows continue to gather fans in |
| earnest. |

| If Schmoov! are the relative new kids on the block, then Toka |
| Project (Steve Walker, Andy Riley and Jason Cowley) are seasoned |
| veterans, having produced and popped up at Smokescreen and DiY |
| parties for a number of years. Already a regular on labels like |
| DiY Discs, Drop, Earth, Freaked, Guidance, and Silver Network, |
| watch out for more from these boys. |

| Having helped expose the talents of so many producers previously, |
| the role DiY had in introducing Atjazz to the world seems almost |
| apt. Now one of the most esteemed producers around, Marting Iveson |
| also takes credit for co-running the superb Mantis label, being |
| one of the most demanded remixers around, and for releasing two |
| stunning albums in the form of 'That Something' (DiY Diversions) |
| and 'LabFunk' (Mantis Recordings). |
| |
| Alex Dean is the latest in a long line to nurture a label within |
| the surrounds of the East Midlands. Originally a fan of techno and |
| hardcore, 1993 saw him re-educated to the ways of house through |
| his attendance at 'those' legendary parties. Having previously put |
| tracks out on Bosh, Eukahouse, Viva, Get Groovy, Surreal and Drop, |
| he now dedicates himself to releasing tracks as Souldoubt on his |
| own Freaked label. |
| |
| Hailing originally from Keighley, Yorkshire, it was an education |
| at Nottingham Trent University that first summoned Chris 'Hot |
| Toddy' to the city. Thankfully for us all, while there he met a |
| chap called Jim Barron and the two began recording together as |
| Crazy Penis. While the duo regularly knock out tunes of the |
| highest order, Chris still finds time to exercise his right as a |
| solo artist with peskily funky releases for the likes of Neon |
| Heights and Paper, and as Passenger (with Ben Smith) for Different |
| Drummer. |
| |
| While those appearing on 'Notts Landing' might represent an |
| impressive list, they're also pieces of a musical jigsaw that |
| represents a forceful, passionate community. From sharing spliffs |
| in studios on Alfred Street and supping pints in The Loft and The |
| Social, to wandering late around the streets of Forest Fields and |
| playing 5-a-side in the Arboretum, there's sense of mutual respect |
| and admiration that wafts through the NG postcodes. If there's one |
| place that harvests all this together, it's DiY's Floppy Disco |
| nights at The Bomb. |
| |
| While music will continue to change direction, whether be it in a |
| studio, car, club, house or field, if you're in Nottingham you'll |
| always find a beat there that is forever house. |
| |
| And 13 years on, DiY are involved in that as ever. |
