While we're exploring that exciting new figural space at the juncture
of techno and hip-hop, it's necessary to turn to the new single by the
prodigious DJ Shadow, one of the progenitors of what now gets routinely
called "trip-hop" (a term Shadow has largely disavowed). His left-field,
anti-hip-hop-establishment turntable work has been impressing hip-hop's
more adventurous artists for sometime now, but his work still
occasionally gets lost between hip-hop and techno purists. "Midnight In
A Perfect World" is a cruel little teaser for Shadow's imminent and much
anticipated full-length record. Shadow likes to tinker around at the
margins of hip-hop, producing nuggets of space age funk perfectly suited
to the bricoleur aesthetic that has always motored the genre's most
creative music. The beats here never clamor for attention, but insert
themselves into the skin of the mix, and the ghostly, distant vocal
stylings are deliberately obscured by the gravelly drums and half-heard
film samples.
