Very nice ten-track mini album resulting from a collaboration
of scottish jazzheads Bill Wells Octet (Bill Wells, Robert
Henderson, Graeme Wilson, Allon Beauvoisin, Lindsay Cooper,
Stevie Jackson and Katrina Mitchell) and Future Pilot A.K.A.,
who's a former Soup Dragon, runs his own Via Satellite record
label and who is also a member of the BMX Bandits.
"Improv collective led by Glasgow based Indian musician Sushil
K Dade. Focuses largely on collaborations, as heard on 1999's
'A Galaxy of Sound' (Sulphur). Mixing tape loops, Eastern
orchestration and surreal sound effects, 1998's 'Future Pilot
AKA vs The Bill Wells Octet' (Domino) is a must for lovers of
leftfield sonics." - Scottish Music Centre
"The collaboration between Glaswegians Bill Wells (local astral
freejazzer and secret weapon for both Pavement and The Pastels)
and Sushil K Dade (aka Future Pilot AKA) has yielded a pretty
heterogeneous record. As a starting-point, Future Pilot AKA
delivered live tape loops for Wells' eight-piece to play around
with. From time to time the resulting pieces show a tendency to
be stretched out a little too long but on the whole this
self-titled CD holds more than enough imaginative and
adventurous music to keep our attention spans happy. In your
short life combines a simple bass-line, a tentative piano motif
and scratching, gliding, scraping, skipping rhythms to create
the illusion of a giant, slowly revolving structure. Advert is
a funny tuba intermezzo, and the spacious Requiem pour un con
slows down at the end like a train running out of steam. The
holes in the music make up the largest part of Pink kitty,
Olympic material's false start contributes to the lazy feel
conjured up by the Toots Thielemans-style harmonica, and a
mock-futurist vocoder'ed announcement ("Prepare for shutdown")
finally leads us to the album's most beautiful track, the
gentle tabla-driven Om Namah Shivaya." - Ultra E-Zine
Note: "Chimps", "No Funerals This Morning" and "Advert" appear
seperately in this one's original tracklist, but as they are
crossfaded we made it one track.
