While Baby Teeth is not yet a household name, the new band
unites three Chicago tastemakers who have left their
collective mark on indie rock. Bandleader Pearly Sweets has
performed as both a solo artist and leader of garage-soul
apostles The Platonics. More recently, Sweets has been playing
keyboards for the legendary Bobby Conn and the Glass Gypsies,
appearing on Conn's new Thrill Jockey release, The Homeland.
Bassist Jim Cooper moonlights as the maniacal frontman for
prog-rock storm-troopers The Detholz!, who recently finished a
stint opening for Wilco. Cooper has also been known to pose as
a Glass Gypsy himself. And drummer Peter Andreadis has long
created inventive analog and electronic compositions under the
aliases All City Affairs and Toy Puma. For fans of the three
musicians, Baby Teeth's dynamic live show and infectious pop
have been a long time coming.

The story really started in September of 2001, when Sweets
took The Platonics to Chicago's Truckstop Audio for a weekend
of recording. The band, fresh from a summer tour with Oh My
God, had shared bills with Yo La Tengo, Mooney Suzuki, and
French Kicks. Now, it was looking to create a follow-up to its
2000 full-length, Pick Yourself Up, released by New Haven
indie Garbage Czar (also home to Ted Leo and The One AM
Radio). The album had sold out of its initial pressing, as the
band won critical acclaim throughout the Midwest and East
Coast. On that cold weekend in September, two great things
were created: first, the Platonics' EP, The Hottest White
Dance Band in America, and second, a friendship between Sweets
and Andreadis, the recording engineer for the sessions. The
pair spoke often over the next year, obsessing over the
minutiae of top-40 radio and Chicago's music culture. In the
spring of 2002, Sweets found another kindred spirit in Cooper,
and the two began attending one another's shows with
increasing regularity.

By the end of 2002, however, The Platonics were close to
breaking up, and Sweets was left with a trove of home
recordings that he'd been accumulating for the past six
months. The new material was relaxed, anthemic and unabashedly
poppy. When he played the recordings for Andreadis and Cooper,
their reactions were identical: each first made Sweets promise
that he'd perform the new material live, and then asked where
and when to meet for the first rehearsal.

The three began playing together in early 2003, spending
months perfecting instrumental arrangements and lush,
three-part harmonies. They didn't perform publicly until May
of that year, but when they did, their natural charisma and
attention to detail made a dramatic impression. Word spread
quickly, and by early 2004, the band's shows had become a
traveling revival tent, intoxicating fans with classic pop
hooks, soaring vocals, and pointed lyrics. They've already
managed to sell out Chicago's indie mecca, The Hideout, and
played with such acts as Fiery Furnaces and Br. Danielson. The
band's first release, The Baby Teeth Single, shows these
strengths in full flower, and the full-length album, recorded
by Griffin Rodriguez (Him, Icy Demons) and due out in June
2005 on Lujo Records, promises another giant step forward for
the band.
